What a joke the big ten hockey tourney is. There’s probably less than 10k attending the Gopher game at the X.

Yep. Even if the Gophers weren’t playing the Final Five was a packed house. This conference sucks!!
Just got home from the x, zero excitement and many many open seats!!
The worst part is the TV aspect of the hockey changes. The B1G screwed up Badger fans not able to get to the Kohl for the better part of the last 5 years. They took away my opportunity to watch them on public tv, then with the Bucks contract on FSN WI on Friday nights took away more opportunities to watch… so I became a TV gopher fan, so I could watch the WCHA and the badgers four times anyway.
Now they have completely F’ed up two great hockey conferences (WCHA & CCHA) and ruined the landscape of college hockey!!! If they’d done it right they would have made the other B1G schools start hockey programs and given them 5 years to get something going, then started their oppression onto the rest of college hockey. But nooooo!!!!
I couldn’t even get MN on FSN at times and that’s the start of a situation that sux!!! Now I get that they couldn’t get something started real good in 5 years, but all of the schools would have been involved.
I have been impressed with the quality of Penn State and OSU has been strong in the CCHA for several years now, but 6 teams??? Oh well more wasted breathe… Just SAD about it all…

Watching the waning moments of the game last night I got thinking. Early this year when I complained about the money grab I was informed that the big 10 made the move and the Gophers had no option but to follow. But, what if the Gophers had refused to go? They tossing them out of the Big 10? What would Wisconsin have done if the Gophers refused? Face it, Minnesota and Wisconsin throw a lot of weight around when it comes to Hockey.
They took a conference (WCHA)where the people came to watch the sport and made it into a money grab where the conference (Big10) is suppose to trump the game itself.
It’s sad, very sad indeed.
As a native North Dakotan (Sioux fan) I must say that the loss of the WCHA has almost totally ruined my enjoyment of college hockey. I hope over time my opinion will change and I’ll be as big a fan as I was before this year. The whole thing just makes me angry….I really hate the big 6. Glad to hear there are Goofer fans out there that feel the same way.
Big crowd tonight! 500 people during pregame with couple minutes till puck drops
It might take awhile for new rivalry’s to develop. The only established rivalry now is MN/WI. Before there were 4 MN schools and with WI and ND close by, it was not too difficult to drive to the games, except for AL of course. Now it is a much longer trip to MI, OH and PA. I am sure the X lost big money, not sure about how ticket prices compared from the WCHA to the Big 10 or if that was even a factor. If the crowds continue to dwindle, the ad revenue will dry up.It would be interesting to see how this move affected attendance in other cities during the regular season and when the tournament finally gets moved to another location.
According to the B1G flop we should find out about other venues next year. From their website:
The inaugural Big Ten Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament will be held March 20-22, 2014, at Xcel Energy Center. The tournament moves to Joe Louis Arena the following year and will be held March 19-21, 2015, and March 16-18, 2017, in Detroit. The 2016 event will return to Saint Paul and be held March 17-19. Tickets for the 2014 Big Ten Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament in Saint Paul are expected to go on sale in the summer of 2013.
What??? You mean 50,000 rabid Buckeye didn’t make the trip to support their team in the Big 10 MegaGrudgeMatch of the century against their old nemesis, the Gold Gophers?
Oh, wait, false alarm. I forgot that fans in the stands are no longer relevant in the New Big Money–errrrm–I mean “Big 10” conference.
The good news is the TV commercials had a pretty decent rating according to Nielson. Hockey-schmockey. Who cares as long as the U gets more $ from commercials. That’s the whole point.
