I’m heading down the the Florida Keys to do a little fishing for a week. Anyone have any recommendations on a guide? I’ll be concentrating on Islamorada area.

    Thanks!

I have not fished with any guides in Islamorada. I have fished with Capt. Buddy LaPointe a couple of times in the Marathon area. I would highly recommend him. If you stay in the Islamorada area, I would contact World Wide Sportsman or Bud N Mary’s marina. . They both have a lot of guides that work out of there marinas.

BrianK has a good guy. I have used him twice out of Islamorada. He fishes out of Glades but that is a short drive for quality fishing. Get recommendations whatever you do. The biggest chance you can take is guessing on a guide. They have fishing guides down there like we have snowplow drivers up here. Lots. The last time I was down I almost hired a jerk over the phone. Luckily I realized it before I committed. Pretty sure he was out of bud and marys.

I just found it. My last trip with him was a little rough so I give him a 8 out of 10 rating whereas before I would have said 10. That was 4 years ago so I don’t know his status now.

I am heading there in 3 weeks! My parents stay there for the winter and thankfully they have a boat. If you want to do some fishing from a kayak in the back waters let me know. The marina where we keep the boat has a guy who wrote a book on it.

Check out the Robinson Brothers Tommy and Chris

I have fished with Chris twice and loved every bit of it. They specialize in flats fishing and have taken the editors of Field and Stream out in the past… I looked at their website and it looks like both of them are booked when you are going to be down there…

Mike you should have fished the flats with him at some point!

As the name suggest Cpt Mike does fish the flats as well site fishing.
Although the glades fishing was unique and fun, I would book my next trip on the flats.

Either way, tell Cpt Mike what you’re looking for and he’ll point you in the right direction.

Based on our family’s experience last year (April 2013) do NOT hire Charlie Klug, (“Tarpon Adventures”). He is a nice guy, but not good fishing outcome, not good tackle provided, way worse overall than other trips to the Keys where I followed this advice:

Do research before your trip, and book the guide before your trip. The good ones will all be booked way in advance. The bad ones will be available nearly anytime.

Have fun – we LOVE the Keys. Hang out at Robbies, browse Worldwide Sportsman, eat OUTDOORS at great restaurants/bars – Lazy Days, Robbies, Lorelei, etc.
