Dells Dam Eau Claire

Just wondering if anybody has put a small boat/canoe in below the Dells Dam in Eau Claire. I’m talking right below the dam, not below the rapids in front of the “city shops”. Not too concerned with water level now, but just wondering if anybody has done it?

    Input appreciated.
    Thanks.

Guys have tied boats off with locks down there, I have taken my small pontoon boat in there. Walleye, SM and musky can be had. I have found the fish move up (walleye) when we get a good rain that cause the water to rise in summer / fall

If you can drag or carry it you can. There is a road right by the paper mill that you can park on and drag down. Just keep it a secret so that there are not a million people there this spring.

Certainly not very secret if you live in or near town and talk with anyone about fishing the Chip, no more secret than the shops or Altoona dam. There are more than a few holes down stream and up from there are secret to those in the know.

Thanks for the input everybody. Agreed, there are many productive small little stretches on the Chip and Eau Claire. But spots like this are far from secret.

I guess I should have been more specific and asked what kind of depth I would be dealing with.
-In front of the gates, in the scour hole?
-In front of the bullnose or concrete barrier?
-On the hydroelectric (East) side of the dam?

No depth finder on my canoe, and not a fan of putting out long anchor ropes around current on the river.
Any input would be appreciated, once again. Thanks all.

I have caught them on the other side of the first current edge. I have seen guy’s fishing musky float there suckers right thru that main current wash and pick up some dandy’s. It’s been awhile not sure on the depths but there is tons of structure in that area, bring plenty of jigs.
