Does anyone know of good resources for learning about pond fish management? Life circumstances are changing and I might be acquiring a pond in upstate NY. Here is what I know:

-Pond is man made, about 10 years old, about 1 acre, and mostly 12-14 feet deep.
-It has a very large pump driven decorative waterfall that crashes over several feet of rocks. Can be turned on/off.
-It can be fed from a man made well (pump to a faucet) to maintain proper levels.
-No structure has been added so it’s just mud/weeds.
-The only fish stocked (by man) have been 5 grass carp and 4 koi (they are all huge).

I was there last summer goofing around fishing and was catching tiny bluegills and yellow perch. I could see tons of small bluegill and perch around the edges of the pond. I also caught and released one 3-4lb largemouth bass, and had a decent strike one other time. The pond has been fished once before a few years ago and a large bass was harvested. That is the only fishing pressure it has seen, ever.

Mostly wondering about how to find out what is in the pond and if I should change anything (e.g., add structure). I am also wondering what kind of fishing this pond could support – is it big enough to support any schedule of eatable fish? Would other species survive and grow (like crappies)?

Ray Scott – Founder of BASS has built and managed many private ponds. I believe he has written a few books as well as put out a video series on the subject. I know he has work on ponds fron only a few acres to several hundred acres. I’d see if you could find a copy of one of his books or videos

I would suggest you contact the NY Dept of Environmental Quality (what they call their DNR in NY) about farm pond management in NY. The other option is the extention office. I know Cornell University has a fisheries and natural resources school so they should have information. Here in Iowa the DNR has a booklet you can request about farm pond management and the extension offices have booklets on aquatic weed management. Here is a link to the information in Iowa http://www.iowadnr.gov/Fishing/AboutFishinginIowa/IowaFarmPonds.aspx Also Auburn University has a lot of information on pond management.
From what it sounds like to me the pond may be out of balance if it has lots of small bluegill and perch and only very large bass.
