We apologize for the delay with getting this posted. We’d go into detail but suffice it to say it involves a crazy combination of travel, new employees, sick kids and lack of sleep. James tried posting it from the road yesterday using his cell phone while standing on top of the tallest hill available trying to get enough signal to make it all happen but in the end it was not meant to be.

Video Details: Season 8 – Episode 13. Ice Fishing. James Holst and In-Depth Outdoors Pro Staffer Quintin Biermann search out open water and warmer weather on the Missouri River near the Big Bend dam upstream from Chamberlain, SD in this installment. The walleye bite is slow while the daytime temps sore to 54 degrees providing welcome relief from the frigid temps experienced winter – 2014!

After this winter, this show pretty much summed up how many people are feeling towards winter. The average highs should be in the mid 30’s. We are stuck in sub zero lows. Then have highs that don’t feel much better with the stiff winds.

It wasn’t a slaughter fest show, of fish after fish.

It wasn’t a show that was topped off with a fat bellied pregnant Walter, with that special glow those big girls are prone too.

But it was a show that had a high dose of reality. Reality that not all trips are barn burners, no matter how good you are. It was a show that truly conveyed how long this winter has wore on, and on.

    And on!

Winter’s grip has not even hinted at loosening up, but for 2 days that let us truly see how miserable the weather has been. Seeing open water was a much appreciated sight for the rest of us who haven’t been able to travel yet. Key word, yet!

Thanks for the welcome distraction from the challenging weather hand we’ve been dealt this wonderful wintery, cold and white season, we refer to as winter.

    Howd you like the ramp???

I cant believe you gave up on plastics so quickly.

That pretty much sums up Chamberlain fishing. Nice eaters, but big fish are rare..

    Nice show..

James–Good call on finding some soft water. You didn’t seem exhausted as you have in the last couple and your demeanor was much improved. You actually looked like you were having fun again. ;-)

Between the cold and a horrible cough and congestion “thing” that I just couldn’t kick I was struggling through much of the last 8 weeks. One foot in front of the other…

Getting out in the boat and some warmer temps basically got me on the mend both mentally and physically. Of course a mega dose of antibiotics didn’t hurt either. I’m feeling right as rain now and revved up to tackle the rest of the ice season and beyond.

It looks like we’ll be headed to Superior to chase lakers through the ice for next week’s show. Now THAT has me excited.

The ramps would have been great if it had gone to the water. That 30′ section of mud between the ramp and the waterline was a train wreck.

I hate fishing minnows but I hate being out-fished more. QB was starting to run away with things so my hand was forced. I did fish plastics on and off for the rest of the day and the fish were having none of it.

It is a really cool area and I know guys have huge numbers days out there when things get rolling. That in and of itself would be reason to go back. That and it is usually 25 degrees warmer out there than here!

My neck of the woods or are you staying a bit closer to home? Things have been hit and miss up here lately and the fish haven’t been all that large, even by our smaller standards.

We’re going out of Red Rock. I haven’t heard of any huge fish but decent numbers in the 4 – 10 lb range.

Those would be nice sized fish as of late over here. ;-) I haven’t ever heard why our fish are that much smaller than those around the Apostles or MN/Ontario shores as I think you have netting over there as well. Good luck.
