If you hit the quick, you’ll be bringing him in for trimmings from that day going forward unless you can restrain him.

Make it fun for the little guy, trim a little at a time and reward him. Leave the clippers next to a bag of treats so he’ll relate trimming with treats. You’ll do just fine.

Yep, we got a kennel with him. Not sure if we’ll end up using it much or not. We’d like to see how it goes without for a few days anyway.

Fritz’s nails are trimmed! We bought the Pedipaws Nail Trimmer and it works great! He didn’t mind it at all and was very good while Billy trimmed his nails. Thanks for the ideas and suggestions everyone.

I would highly recommend using a kennel, here is some info on why you should kennel train a dog.

That’s good news! I’ve heard some horror stories, so if your dog tolerates it, that is a great thing!

I’m going to third the crate training suggestion. Dogs naturally have a den instinct and adopt a crate as their den. Floyd retreats to his kennel whenever he needs a break. A kennel is not for punishment. It is for the safety of the dog. Also, if you ever travel, a crate is a near must, and having a dog that likes a kennel is a huge plus if you ever stay with friends or relatives (we have several dogs in the family that are horrible in crates, and it drives me insane to listen to their constant barking and whining). It’s up to you, but for the sake of your dog’s safety and your home’s upkeep, I highly recommend it.

    Good luck!

Ditto on the kennel. If he came with one and does not have access to it now, that may cause him to stress out.

We didn’t think he might be missing being kenneled. Well, much thanks to all your advice! We’ve set up his kennel and he’s pretty happy with it. I never considered the info regarding dogs being den animals and like have a covered space all to themselves. Once we got it set up, Fritz grabbed one of his toys and went in to lay down for a while. We’re training him to lay in there (with the door open) while we eat dinner and that is going very well.

Clearly this is my first dog and I have to ask, how often should dogs get a rawhide to chew on? My sister prefers bully sticks over traditional rawhides. Thoughts?

Excellent idea! You’ll be glad you did.

I don’t like them mainly because they get so gross and slimy. I’d say it’s up to you. Make sure that you supervise because they can choke on pieces depending upon how aggressive they get. Floyd loves rawhides and bully sticks, but we limit them just because of the nastiness factor.

You do know what a bully stick is, right???

My wife didn’t believe me. I showed her the packaging, which lists the ingredients as “Bull Pizzle”. So, she looked up what bull pizzle is…
