Billy and I got a new hunting buddy! His name is Fritz and he’s an 8 month old German Shorthaired Pointer. We just picked him up today and I’m trying hard to come to terms with the fact that my house will never be clean again.

You are going to love the gsp. The males I hear can grow pretty big! They are a very smart dog. Mine was out hunting and pointing at 5 months! She is wild and crazy (yet listens) in the field and a great big cuddler in the house. Make time and pay attention to them and they will love and respect you unconditionally.

Great choice and nice looking dog! Our black and white GSP is a great family member and once they get past 1 year old they really seem to settle down.

My friend had a German short hair that looked just like yours. Was a very good looking dog and the hardest hunting dog I ever shot over. congrats!

Pheasants, grouse, or both? That guy will give you a lifetime of pleasure and stories just watching him work. Dang I miss my pointer…

Congrats!!! What a great looking dog, like tripjorgen said you are going to love your GSP they are great dogs, great hunters and great family dogs that are eager to please. The pic is of our late GSP Abby she was a part of our family for 14 years.

Thanks everyone! Billy and I are super excited to start hunting with him! We like to hunt both pheasant and grouse, so we’ll see how he does with both. Last night was our first night with him, and he did very well. I’m not used to hearing the clickity-clank of a dog walking around on hardwood floors in the night/early morning, but Billy says I’ll get used to it.

My pug needs his trimmed every 2 weeks. They grow like weeds and he is not exactly the most active dog.

Oh, I didn’t consider that we’d have to trim his nails. Can we trim his nails ourselves, or do we need to bring him to the vet for that?

Easy to do yourself. I like to keep them short enough that they never hit the floor.

We used something like this, our dog liked it much better than a regular cliper, did not have to worry as much about going to short with the nail.

I use a Dremel with a sanding drum. More snort, although I have a great Dane, so his nails are quite large.

If you hit the quick, you’ll be bringing him in for trimmings from that day going forward unless you can restrain him.

Tuffy does not do well with nail trimmings, so I leave it to a professional. I still have to hold him, which mean I still get gnawed on and have to try and hold my breath. He gets gassy when he is nervous. Gassier, I should say.

Yeah Fritz let one go last night, and I assumed it was Billy. It was the perfect set up for “I didn’t fart. The dog did!”

Like Pug mentioned, not too short! and start now so he gets used to it and try and do it regularly.
    Great looking dog!

Our Border Collie got gassy on car rides in her later years. That’s something we all still laugh hard about. We’ve been looking for a new one, it’s been two years since we put Pepper down.

I think I forgot to mention…Congrats! Lots of fun and frustration ahead.

The nice part about grinding them is it takes the worry about clipping the quick out of the equation. If you get a little too short, you get a little blood, not a spurter like if you clip the quick. Get him used to it with short, frequent sessions (one nail at a time, if need be), and do it often. The quick will receed as you shorten the nails, so you can keep them shorter if you do it more often (before kids, we were on a weekly session). They get used to it; Floyd falls asleep at times when I do his!

Some frustration indeed… our kitchen was a bit of a mess yesterday afternoon. I guess we have a little bit of doggy-proofing to do! We spent the evening clearing off counters putting shoes and boots away. It’s amazing how much random crap we used to leave sitting out. Not anymore!! Fritz and I woke up early and went outside to play for a while this morning. I’m not used to being up that early and being out in the cold, but he looks so happy hopping and jumping through the snow – it’s worth losing that extra bit of sleep.

Billy texted me that picture and I just couldn’t help but laugh. I guess this will be a new adventure for all 3 of us! Besides, it’s hard to be mad at such a sweet pup. Here he is curled up by my chair yesterday while I worked on the computer.

Congrats on the new addition. Do you have a kennel for the pup?
