Help! Have a 1997 k2500 with the 454. The other morning I started it and it developed a squeal. I thought it was the belt as it sounded exactly like that. I then took the belt off and ran it without the belt on. Same squeal. It sounds like a top end kind of area. I tried the wood stick on various areas but can’t really hear anything but the squeal is there! No codes yet no real change in how it runs. Only has 92 k on it. When I was backing into the garage it flashed the check Gage’s light but nothing looked low. Oil level is good. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I have had air intake whistles on vehicles before, especially in cold wether. You might try pulling your filter and such.

Tried that. Definitely in the engine somewhere. Wondering if I have an oil port plugged and no lubricating the top end correctly. Thanks though.

Sounds like the intake is leaking, use some WD 40 and check for leaks.

well if you took belt off nothing should be turning except internals like cam crank etc.. if thats the case!! GOOD LUCK!!!

if the belt was still on the front top idler pully on these has a tendency to have the bearing dry out.. $25 fix..

    take it to a shop!!

Thanks for the ideas. I am afraid it is bad. I will take it in tomorrow.

Jury is back. Shop said it needs new lifters and a new cam. 1400 bucks to get it all done. said he wouldn’t really know for sure until he gets in there.

anyone know of a good mechanic that works on the side out of his garage for cash? I would be interested in giving the business to a guy like that!

At least it isn`t the worst job pull intake, valve covers, radiator, water pump, chain case cover and there you are. Good luck and hopefully all goes well.
