It’s official. The Sochi games are a failure. The Finns knocked the Russians out of the medal rounds. Granlund sealed there fate with the insurance goal.

Everyone was talking about pressure, so I thought Russia would be a dark horse to win it all. I guess I forgot they have no defense and they pretty much have a bunch of flashy forwards. They need more Datsyuks and less Kovalchuks. They also seem to be relatively old.

Sign Kristers GUDLEVSKIS! Man, I wish I saw that game. Dude stopped 57 of 59 shots by the Canadians! Had to be exciting to watch.

He was unconscious. He is the backup for Syracuse in AHL, he was drafted last year in 5th rnd by Tampa. VERY unnerving to watch, figured Price would let in a weak one and we would be done like Russia.

Maybe it’s because I’m not a hockey fan, but I don’t believe my generation has the spite for Russia like those old enough to remember the cold war. It was cool to see the shootout win, but I would have felt the same over most any team. Well, except Canada. I feel they are our true rivals on the ice now days. Even so, that is a rival, not hatred for our neighbors to the north. Just good ol’ competition.

My dad is a first generation born here from Finnish immigrants. He had three uncles that fought the Russians during that winter war. I have their military pictures (complete with rifle in one hand and skis in another). You shoulda heard him when the Finns beat the Russians! That axe is not buried for his generation!

Check out Simo Hayha, very interesting–he was a Finnish sniper during the Winter War who has the highest number of confirmed sniper kills in any major war, 505 to be exact, all with iron sights and all within a 100 days! I would’ve hated to be a Russian knowing he was out on the prowl

I didn’t think Finns as a whole were that expressive, what did he say…”Gee Toivo, we beat the Rus.” ;-)

BTW, I’m married to the daughter of first generation USA born immigrants. Some of her aunts and uncles were Finn born however.
