I’m thinking of putting in a Pet Door for my medium sized Cocker. Reviews on Pet Safe doors are mixed. Any recommendations? Things you wish you knew before you put one in?

    read this first!

(NECN: Kathryn Sotnik, Hingham, Mass.) – A Hingham, Mass. woman had a very frightening experience after police say a rabid raccoon made its way into her bed and attacked her.

Police say they received a call around 10:50 Wednesday morning from a 73-year-old resident who had barricaded herself in her bedroom.

The raccoon, according to animal control, walked into the home on Hersey Street through a small cat door.

Hingham Animal Control Officer Leslie Badger says the raccoon then, “made it’s way up onto the bed and then curled up and went to sleep.”

“It got into bed, and she thought it was her cat and started petting it,” said a neighbor who knows the victim well.

At that point, animal control says the raccoon attached itself to the woman’s face and started to attack her.

She was able to shoo the raccoon out of her bedroom. It was later found and captured in the bathroom.

However, the woman was found with bites and scratches to her lip and chin. Her thumbs were even slashed from trying to remove the raccoon from her face.

Thursday afternoon animal control confirms the raccoon, which they euthanized, tested positive for rabies.

The victim is now going through a series of painful rabies shots. She is home recovering and is in close contact with her doctor.

State Environmental Police also assisted with the removal of the raccoon. They’ve provided a raccoon fact sheet which you can find here.

Train you dog to go in a homemade version before you install it. Then your pup will be a pro! Good to hear form a cocker Owner! Is it field or show?

I’m truly sorry for this lady, but the person that wrote that line must have been giggling all the way to the print shop.

Buzz, I’ve thought about those doors too, but after coon, skunks, possum and a few weasels in my drive way, I passed. ‘Course our door come directly into the kitchen or the living room. I guess I might reconsider if we had a porch or a mud room.

I’m not sure of the brand or price, but I saw one on a home show the other day. It was opened by a radio activated device on the dog’s collar. That way it always shut tight and no other animals could get in.

This might have been the one. Looks like it can be installed directly in the wall too.

I had a pet raccoon when I was 14. He was litter box trained and not much of a nuisance. I do see quite a few in our neighborhood, it might be became we are so close to Minnehaha Falls. I’m still thinking of trying a pet door but need to come up with something affordable and keeps colder weather out. The Pet Safe extreme temp. isn’t getting good reviews.

I purchased the Easy Dog Door for use in the garage for about a 65# lab. Door has been in use for almost 8 years and it’s been great. I also purchased the drop-in panel and that’s been nice to have to keep the cold out in the winter. Install was easy from the inside. Had to improvise with j-channel on the exterior siding. Mounting height depends on your dog’s height. I would definitely purchase again.
