Government Regulation?

It’s been years since I’ve needed to buy a gas can. Had to get a little one for the auger. Can these things be any more of a pain to operate? How is it safe, it sprayed gas everywhere! Springs and pulling and twisting, while it’s -5 without gloves?

I think the old ones were a heck of a lot safer. Maybe I’m not doing it right but it came out in a wide spray pattern.
    Frustrating.

That’s why you go to garage sales and buy all the old ones you can.

These are the result of regulations? You talking about the ones you have to put the tab on the rim of the tanks hole and push down? The ones that put 5ozs in and the take 5 second to release the pressure built up so I can get 5 more ozs?

I got one some time ago because I was desperate, but I thought it was just the manufacturer doing that on their own.

Government. They won’t be happy until there is a bathroom “navigator” in every house to wipe your butt.

The feds and state really get me steamed up about this. You know, every session you don’t have to pass new laws and regulations. In fact you could just repeal a few. Every year we add new laws and regulations, some good, but there gets to be a saturation point where these busy bodies start making ridiculous and unnecessary legislation.

I’d like to see a new party run on no new laws and stripping government reach down. I’d like to see them get control of congress and the White House. Then role back some of the crap that is a nuisance and holding the country back.

Then we’d be cooking with gas!

    It’s a pretty simple fix…
Take the spout and remove the white plastic insides and the spring etc.,add someway to vent and your good to go
There is a couple of different methods…do a quick google search

If I can do it anyone can……

I don’t know it to be fact that it is regulated but would wage a large amount of cash on it. If it wasn’t some guy would sell the old school kind that works and corner the gas can market.

I assumed there was some sort of modification like Mudshark talks about, but there lies the problem. The Govs involvement leads to people having to dink around with these things. It also creates loop holes, I saw the the old type nozzle for sale for about $9.

Sorry for the rant, their just showing up and impacting our lives more and more.

Careful Pug, don’t give them any ideas! They’ll have you paying for it as well.

The is part of the same [censored] EPA CARB regulations that made outboard gas tanks go up from $20 to $75 and hoses go from $15 to $50.

It seems that the EPA discovered that the biggest problem in the world is the evaporation of fuel. It’s kind of the EPA’s version of ethanol, whatever the problem, it’s caused by fuel evaporation.

So back during the Bush administration, the EPA went on a 10 year plan to legislate out of existance every portable fuel container and to replace it with vastly more complicated “solutions”.

Of course, all of this was done without much in the way of warning.

As has been posted above, plenty of how-tos online to rip all the junk out of those spouts and make them so they actually work. If you search youtube for the name of the maker of your gas can, you’ll find a video for how to hack out the stupid CARB valve.

I suspect lawsuit-happy lawyers have far more to do with your gas can design than govt regulation. Liability plays a huge role here. Many people are injured yearly by doing ridiculously stupid things with gas cans, so why not sue the manufacturer on their behalf??? Effort to stem that liability has been rendered into some of the most complicated plastic mechanisms known to man. Pretty neat.

I got one that I was all pissed off when I got it but it is my favorite for ice fishing now. Press the tab put spout into the tank and press once close to full pull up and no lost cap for my can. Now a large tank that would suck.

I take the spout off the can and carefully pour through long rigid tranny fluid funnel, they usually fit into any fuel tank and are a cheap fix.

Thanks Grouse, EPA, I couldn’t think of it. I could start a whole thread on the EPA. How about truck bumpers and plastic?

Good find. It appears to be reverse Darwinism where the strong suffer from the actions of a few weak.

I think your right Roottwo, My boys life long friend took a 2 year law course for an associated trade. In this course the teacher told the class that litterly (every) law thats been passed since the 60’s has been because of insurance influance. I asked every law and he said yes, its hard to believe but I can see how it would happen.

What pis-es me off is when your getting gas it all goes in the tank until the last .50 cents, then it slowly trickles until it reaches the amount. At 60 below wind chills thats real enjoyable. Thank goodness for insurance regulations hey?

You guys going around the law buying those replacements, shame on you.

The manufacturer of those cans who got sued in that link should make replacements to swap out. That would be pretty funny and a win-win for them.

Another argument for propane power? It cost me twenty bucks, two trips to the store, a meltdown in the garage that would make Tony Soprano blush. All to put 20 ounces of gas in my auger.

My favorite part about them is the pressure that builds in them in the summer. Mine would blow up like balloons in the hot garage (prior to some mods).

I’ve noticed that too. I bet at some point they are going to need to add separate pressure release valve because of litigation. Some moron somewhere it going to be playing with the spring loaded nozzle and get gas in his eyes, lungs and/or stomach.

No Deertracker, around here you eigther pay at the pump with a card or prepay at the counter. The attendent sets the pump for the amount you payed for, then you pump the gas. The last 50 cents goes in so slow its unreal.

I’ve been pumping gas at BP lately and will drive out of my way to BP just so I get better service, they slow the pump at 15 cents before the full amount then pump the last 15 cents relatively fast so you don’t have to freeze you as- off.

Maybe the other stations want you to hang around the pump and remember that you forgot to buy something in the store so they make an extra 15 cents by buying a doughnut. In my opinion its all a sales pitch instead of effeciency, they make a lot of money by making you hang around, heck everybody knows that.

They make you prepay because of gas thefts.
