This cold weather’s making me wish that I was pulling in some big walleyes with the open water gear! Anybody have any ideas on how the cold/long winter will affect the run?

    New boat coming, too!

if you could find a way to heat lakes/rivers to 44-48 degrees it would help, and maybe play a little marvin [censored] underwater to set the mood

next decent day on a weekend I’m gunna hit up a spot on the Miss that hot water discharge keeps open…, AND IT’S NOT REDWING, yeah who woulda thunk, but it involves a decent hike and a good terrain utilizing sneak through a coal plant, post some pics if I get down there soon, never hit it from shore but ditched a boat there to hit the retention pond before, this is the time where the ambitious get first dibs, gotta love it, anyone who’s ever snuck into a fishing hole has to agree that the moments of nervous giggling laying in the grass waiting for someone to finish their smoke break and go back inside often are more memorable than the fishing itself

Need more open water talk!! Figuring out these river eyes is a fun game. I’ll be checking out the river hopefully 2x a week with a spotlight come spring time. Talked to an old timer down at the river last fall, and he said you would be surprised how early they get a going. There will be plenty of ice left and those fish will be making their way forward already. Was out last fall 3-4x a week to keep checking when the first eyes showed up at the dam and was way earlier than what I had expected. Be cool to see the eyes if I’m right, and maybe if I’m lucky they will bite on some of the cutbait I’ll have out for the kitties doing my research.

There are plenty of years that walleye migrate up to holes adjacent to spawning habitat well before the ice comes off. That can easily be weeks prior to reaching 44 degrees

    January’s almost over!

I’ve got my eyes on a few new places this year for the season, too. Randy, I haven’t ever caught walleyes that early but I know there are people who catch em that early and I’d like to be one of them!

I’ll be out as soon as I can get the boat out onto my favorite stretch of the Wisconsin river. I want to scout and make note of the places where the river opens up before that first. Those are the places of greatest current, and walleyes love current in the spring. I’ve already had the boat out just as the river opened where I was passing guys still on the ice in back bays and slack water areas.

Hey Guys!!!! My Dad and I Fished Pool 4 this last weekend. Saturday was slow but sunday we did really good. We started to fish around 8am. By noon we had 10 of our 12 walleyes. Then it took us 2 hours to catch our last two.By 2pm we were done. it was really slow after noon. We caught 50-75 small walleyes. The ones we kept were 15″-18″. The bigger ones were in about 20 feet of water. We fished all day at the dam. We only caught one fish on plastics. That was our first time out to the Mississippi River. We usually go to the Missouri River. We r thinking of goin out there this next weekend. If anyone fishes this weekend keep me posted!! Thanks!!

Selecting walleyes in Feb using the Reports Forum search engine comes up with some pretty nice Feb fish.

Thats why he is a guide.

Here in mn Im starting to wonder what spring time water levels are going to be. Seems like we have a pretty good snow pack on the ground covering a very area of the state. Doesnt mean bad flooding but its on of many factors that can lead to it.

a good flood/freshet can be really good for spawning/egg development. we just don’t know how long winter will last yet…but if it sticks around too long that’s typically not that great for either. last year on namakan a lot of spawning started near or under rotting ice…not good

We certainly don’t need any more snow for good walleye spawn levels. Last year we had some near perfect conditions in my opinion, but I didn’t get out as much as planned and put even fewer fish in the boat. The more snow we get, the faster those rivers are going to run though and the more those big marble-eyes are going to want to put on some Barry White and swim real slow-like.
