It is that time of year. I am looking back at my family’s taxes for the year. Just wondering. What the average nonbusiness owners are duducting. This year we have med, work clothing, cell phones, lawyers ( got to love the state of MN), what should I be watching for this year?

These are a few things I add that get looked over:

-Tools and footwear purchased for work.

-Donations to goodwill, Easterseals, salvation army, etc.

-Miles driven to doctors appointments can be logged with medical

-I assume you got prescriptions in with medical

-Washing my own uniforms for work

I’ll think of more I’m sure.

How do you guys deduct cell phones?

My employer mandates I have a working phone. I only have a cell phone. I don’t know the particulars, but my tax guy does. If I had a land line, that most likely would be the deduction

Cell phones if your employer does not help out you can deduct half.

What was explained to me by our CPA is that the general rule is that anything your employer REQUIRES you to have, but does NOT reimburse you for, is a possible deduction and we should save the documentation and reciepts.

So that would seem to line up with what guys are saying about cell phones and uniform expenses. If it’s required but the employer doesn’t pay for it…

There have been a lot of energy efficiency deductions over the past 10 years. We got a duduction/rebate/whatever when we had all new windows put in as part of a rennovation. Obviously, you have to scrounge up all the documentation, which took a while, but in this case it was worth it.

I didn’t know you could deduct medical expenses. Can you write off all medical expenses?

So, most places of employment that I know of (besides strip clubs) require employees to wear clothing, Shirt/Pants/Shoes etc…. They do not reimburse for the clothing, so is that really tax deductible ?

After saving every damn scrap of paper for the year, I was told it needed to come to $5k or more of out of pocket expense. Medical insurance isn’t deductible.

This is why I asked the question as well.

Same for internet if you are required to have it to do work activities from home office.

Pre tax insurance premiums are not tax deductible. Self employed health insurance premiums are tax deductible. Cobra premiums are tax deductible. Social security medicare part b premiums are not since they are deducted from the taxable portion of your social security(pre tax). Still, check with your tax advisor.

Brian, tell me that the camper of yours is not a business property?

If it is personal then rent it to yourself but then you personally would have to claim income from your self to your personal taxes. That can be quite the circle jerk!

    Business property, no?
    Yes.

BK: I want to deduct my camper as a business expense.
Tax Guy: No, you aren’t using it for business.
BK: Sure I am. The reason I’m at the camper is for business.
    Tax Guy: No.
BK: My boss makes me stay there and doesn’t reimburse me.
Tax Guy: NO! Now sign here, here and here and get out of here.
BK: How about 144 clown noses?
Tax Guy: (slams door behind me)

If I had to travel to Redwing to manage a job, well over an hours travel each way to and from home for an extended period of time, there would be either a motel or an apartment fully furnished involved in the pricing. This would appear as administrative costs plus the “items on the back page”. It is a cost attached to the project, no different than the phone, fax, camera, vehicle, per diem rates for meals, ect.

How is your situation any different?

Yea, yea, I know this was a non business subject for deductions. But still, for you Brian, are you not in Business?
