I told Mrs. Grouse a few months ago that I have a bad, bad feeling about Sochi and Comrade Putin’s ability to provide security.
The fact of the matter is that Putin’s 10 year battle against North Caucaus islamic factions AND his strutting/preening, and making the Olympics a personal PR vehicle for Putin Inc. has set up a situation where an attack is almost inevetable.
In a strange reversal of fotunes, the prime target will be the RUSSIAN olympic team. That would be the ultimate humiliation for Putin, the message being he’s so weak he couldn’t even protect the home team.
Obviously, the Russians know this, so Russian athletes will be THE priority for security. That doesn’t leave me feeling good about the rest of the world’s athletes.
Putin is a classic case of “small man syndrome”, a man who’s always feeling the need to prove how tough he is. Putinist Russia is NOT the Soviet Union and Putin himself is no Stalin or Lenin. He is too weak to stop the terrorists in any substantial way.
I wouldn’t want my family anywhere near Sochi.
