I might have an option to tag along on a trip to Cancun, Mexico. Staying at the Westin. I’m not much of a lay on the beach guy. It does have a swim up bar though. What is a must do down there? Any fishing advice? Money will be a little tight. Thanks

Bad idea! I can’t describe the horrors awaiting you if you go. You need to send that ticket to me asap!
January 23, 2014 at 12:19 pm #1382174Spend the evening fishing the bay with a guide.Fairly cheap and we enjoyed it a lot more than sea fishing charters.
Small amounts of drugs are legal now and always a cheap option.January 23, 2014 at 12:38 pm #1382177i stayed at the Westin down there. sweet accomodations. Mexico is NOT a deal anymore. used to be cheap.
January 23, 2014 at 12:45 pm #1382180Is Cancun one of the areas you can wander around and check out historical locations and mingle with the locals OR must you remain in your COMPOUND?

Cancun and the Rivera Maya is generally not considered a danger zone for the drug gang violence that plagues the border and other regions. We went down there 2 years ago when violence levels were peaking. I checked with several travel agents and the state department website and the opinion was that it was still safe to travel in the resort areas.
Obviously, there are the “other” safety concerns. Tourists are a target for petty crime just like they are in every other tourist city in the world.
Personally, I’m not a Cancun fan anymore. Development and a steady flow of tourists has inflated prices to the point where there are other options that are better and cheaper. I like to go further down the coast and get out of the hotel crowds.

So, with the proper motivation, you CAN swim?!

I already checked the max depths of the pools. I’ll be fine.

Why WOULDNT you go?!
So you are volunteering to watch the kids, dog, and house? Plus, it’s prime ice fishing. Plus, airfare isn’t cheap.
January 23, 2014 at 2:34 pm #1382229Is that even a question? Although Cancun is what it is. You must lay on the beach and drink cold beer. Then you must eat bomb tasting tacos and drink a few more beers. And get tan. Do all that and your trip will be complete. Thats a complete list of must dos for Mexico.
January 23, 2014 at 4:00 pm #1382283Last time I went to Cancun, my wife and I took a ferry out to the island of Isla Mujeres. I had a buddy and his girl friend that were staying out there. We hung out on a beach and bellied up to a local beach bar and got in trouble for gawking at the hot chick that was enjoying the clothing optional beach there. We damn near missed the last ferry back to Cancun. It was a good cheap way to spend the day.
January 23, 2014 at 4:04 pm #1382284We did an all-inclusive trip many years ago. Like Mr. Tickleson said the food was so-so. The portions were small but we chalked that up to the all-inclusive thing. Hardly any of the Mexican food had cheese on it, we’re used to the American”Mexican” cusine.
We didn’t wonder outside the confines of the resort hardly at all, safety I guess.
If you’re looking to relax and enjoy warm weather that’s the place to do it.
I like to be on the go, sight see, learn things. I get very little sleep on vacation but I got quite a bit down there.
There are probably a lot of things to do though, parasailing, jet ski, snorkel etc…January 23, 2014 at 5:20 pm #1382321Quote:

This aligns with our 3 year experience in Cancun. Heading to Cabos this year. Go, get away from winter.
January 23, 2014 at 6:43 pm #1382349When I was down there for my honeymoon, I got hooked on mango margaritas. Best fufu drink ever. If you can get some fresh mango as well, that is a treat, they taste so much better than the mangoes you get up here.
January 23, 2014 at 6:46 pm #1382350Good info. It is an all inclusive resort. If we can get childcare figured out…I’m in! Any more fishing adventures? Is there any inland fishing opportunities?

I know there are lakes in Mexico that hold some of the biggest bass in North America, but not sure where they are in relation to Cancun. You’d probably have to hire a guide, but I bet it would be worth it! This is coming from a bass guy of course……
January 23, 2014 at 7:03 pm #1382356Best thing about swim up bars is you never have to leave to go to the bathroom.
January 23, 2014 at 7:09 pm #1382361I second what Bzzsaw said, of course, he’s always right!
Island Mujeres or however you spell it. Even though you’re at an all inclusive, you’ll get bored in one spot. You can go out to this island and for roughly $30 drink and eat all day and do things like zipline, scuba, and stare at all the hotties from Brazil!!
Yowwwza!
We loved Cancun!

Watch out for the floating Baby Ruth candy bars!!
MikeVPosts: 104January 23, 2014 at 7:51 pm #1382383Go for it if you can swing it. I went a few years ago with family for a week. It was fun but not something I feel I need to do anytime soon.
My son turned 11 down there. Still remember being at the beach with him and a topless woman walked up the beach. He looked at me and said “What the hell!” Still laugh with the wife on that one.
Be careful when the surf up. Riptides are pretty scary when you first experience them. Had the large waves slam me in to the bottom, pull my trunks down to my feet and drag me junk down across the sand and small coral pieces. You would have thought I put it in a wood chipper. Plus side was that just about every woman with a bikini had the top ripped off in the waves. Probably took about an hour of tops getting pulled down to figure out the water was too rough.
January 23, 2014 at 7:53 pm #1382384Not worth it. Been there and have no interest in going back. Getting drunk and laying around is not my idea of fun.
