With this one being a docudrama, it is certainly not a reality show. That’s the best part.

Watched a little last night and it is certainly a drama, that’s for sure. I thought it was ok.

Does it really rain every single night in AK?

last nights episode was right before winter set in so yes it did rain a lot.

I understand that it’s a docu-drama and wasn’t comparing it to a reality show per say, just in general that there are a bunch of shows about Alaska on TV.

Alaska is Huge! The northern to southern point is the same distance as the northern tip of MN to the tip southern tip of Texas or close.

I spent a month in AK and it never rained in a rain shadow we were in for much of the time. Other areas rained nearly every day. The mountains effect the weather so much. In July one day it was 80 at the start of a hike and it snowed once we hit a certain elevation. Try packing for that trip.

I for one have loved watching it thus far, as with most shows today there are some major questions I have as far a historical accuracy, but that is just my nature as a history major. I have found it very entertaining, the one thing I hate about it is the whole romance with Belinda, yea I know it happened during that time but is it really necessary to the show I don’t believe so, but that is today’s media I guess.

I’ve liked it so far, but am glad it’s only 3 episodes. I’m so sick of shows going on for years, and having to go farther and farther to keep “fresh”.

The wife has been DVRing the show, but we haven’t started watching it yet. With this weather though, it won’t be long I’m sure……. As far as the Alaska reality shows? I’ve got a love/hate relationship with them. I love watching them because it’s fascinating how some of these people live, and how capable they are with getting along with little to no materials. The hate part stems from all the blatantly obvious staging of events to create drama. I’m sure most of the events really can happen from time to time, but not often enough to catch them on camera, so they have to stage them up to keep things “interesting”.

The jury is still out for me, will wait to see how the final episode ends tonight before my final decision. I was wondering about some of the historical accuracy of the show too!

I like it. I love history especially the 1800’s through WWII. I thought episode 1 was good and episode 2 was so so. Will for sure watch tonight. I thought the scenery was awesome in episode 1. I also liked the mini series of Bonnie & Clyde and the Hatfields & Mccoys too.

My nephew says he’s surveying in 48 degrees up there. What a backwards world.

Enjoyed the ending last night. I usually don’t get to concerned about how factual shows are. However the scene where the guy falls through the ice and the gold bricks are “floating” was over the edge.

If you followed it to the end they said the main character returned to Alaska in 1901 never to be heard from again. Interesting.

Oh another weird detail. (the school closed thread reminded me) The guy is walking across the frozen lake, clearly freezing. At no time did he flip the big collar up on his coat. Really….even somebody from Minnesota would have flipped his big fur collar up!

One thing I noted as odd in the notes at the end was that the lady in the show died penniless in 1967 in Washington. If she was a real estate baron in the 1890’s, she had to be one heck of a young woman when she was up there…..,that is quite impressive considering that women were considered a 2nd class group in those days.

I caught the first episode the other day and really like it. I was surprised when the friend died, I thought for sure they were going to be together the whole time.

I’ll have to catch episode 2 and 3 and see how it ends.
