    Please don’t make this a brand debate…

I’m looking to upgrade into a ram 1500. I thought a V8 was the way I wanted to go, but I test drove a 2011 today with a V6. It had everything I needed for my daily commute, which will be 99% of the miles put on it.

But sometime in the next year or so I’d like to get a more capable boat. Nothing crazy big, something 17-18 foot and tin. Will I be able to reasonably haul it with that rig or am I going to be terribly underpowered? A V8 would be nice, but if I can do without it i would like to and save on gas for my 1 hr daily commute.

I could only assume its the same for RAM, when I was looking at Silverados a few years back, as far as mileage goes the v8 got better mileage than the v6.

It should be just fine, no mountains near your house.

I don’t have any experience with a Dodge V6, but I had a 2001 S-10 with the 4.3L V6 which had somewhere around 200 HP. I was terribly disappointed with the gas mileage that I got with it. Commuting on a 4 lane HWY, I only got about 14 mpg. Towing my 14′ boat, I would get somewhere closer to 12 mpg. I know each vehicle/motor is different but I will most likely spring for an 8 cylinder when I buy my next truck.

That pentastar v6 from ram cranks out 305 hp and 25 mph on highway. It also has an 8 speed transmission, I test drove one and was very impressed.

Currently I drive an 2002 ram with the 4.7 @ 240 hp and pulls my 18 ft
    boat no problem.

Well, looks like the 2011 ram had the older v6, pentastar v6 came out later, you won’t be happy with that vintage v6, I had one in a 1998 dakota and it was a dog.

I have the 2013 Penstar V6 with the 8 speed transmission Ram and could not be happier! As far as towing, I pull a 17 1/2 ft Lowe with a 100hp motor with no problem at all, 23 1/2 to 24 mpg real world driving.

That’s impressive . And about time! Trucks have been gas hogs for years. If you can get the power and mileage great!

Don’t do it. That 3.7 is not made for towing or hauling heavier loads. The few we sell, from what I know, the mileage increase is zip… now if you pull with that 3.7, your really gonna pay

I believe that truck only has towing capacity of #5000. That alone would make me leary it makes me think they scimped on a lot more then the motor such as tranny and brakes.

Transmission and brakes are not downsized, it has the 545RFE transmission also.
