What is your guys preference for small split ring pliers. My regular tool does poorly on split rings for the 1/8 ounce or so spoons and other lures when I try to change hooks. Share what works best for you please.

Hemostats, needle nose, literally any pliers that close at the tip. A small spinner blade can be used as well.

I hear ya, I switched out about a dozen of my hooks on the small split rings and it was a pain in the butt!! I used my small leathermans pliers and it works ok but was still hard when they are so small.

Hopefully it will pay off with some new bigger sharper hooks!

I bought a small split-ring tool from Cabelas 2 seasons ago that work great for the smaller split rings a bunch easier than regular pliers IMO…paid about $16 but it works great!

I still just use a fingernail. But its incredibly frustrating on the tiny ones.

I bought one from Cabelas years ago and still use it. I would highly recommend the ones with a tooth at or near the end. The one pictured in the earlier link is not the same as the one I have. You can get one of these from Amazon for <$10.

I don’t find them hard at all? Takes about 5 seconds to change a treble on a small split ring with a pair of needle nose. Actually very easy.

either worth or Weber, makes a decent ‘low end ‘ split ring pliers.. you need one with a tooth on it.. a tooth that comes down to cover the bottom blade out on the end.. ( I don’t know the correct way to describe it..)..

Hope you can see this, sorry about the crappy picture. Just grab one half of the split ring with hemostats or any pliers that close at the tip and the hook in your other hand like in this picture. Push away from you with the hook to spread the ring. If you are threading on a lure or hook, then place the lure at the same place and push away from you to spread the ring. Seriously takes 1 second to do once you learn to do it. No fancy tool needed.

Well Kevin….Not everybody has the dexterity and hand strength to do your method easily…
Besides, I was always taught to use the proper tool(fancy or not) for the job….That’s why they made them.
If you can do it this way, more power to ya..but the original poster asked what worked for other people and we answered..That’s all…

My wife has a a split ring plier for jewelry. Unfortunately there is no name stamp on it. Besides split rings they have some other functions. But the best I have ever used
