The price online is NOT the price in-store.

Just a warning to IDo’ers out there. There is a new fad out there with retailers that I’ve been caught by twice in the past 3 days. The price you see online is NOT the price you’ll be charged in the store.

At both Best Buy and Sears in the past 3 days, I’ve looked up items online and then gone to the store and been charged a HIGHER price.

At Best Buy, the camera I bought was advertised for $209, but the “in-store price” was $249. Because I had other items, I didn’t notice this until I was out of the store and looked at my reciept because the final total just seemed high to me.

At Sears it was the same thing. The online price for a parts kit for a garage door opener was $23.99, but the item rang up as $29.99 in the store.

In both cases I was given exactly the same line: Our online prices are seperate from our store prices. I can price match the item if you’d like.

So the bottom line is watch carefully and if you came for a price advertised online, make sure you get it at the register. This appears to be a new fad so that retailers can advertise the lowest prices online, but then sell at a higher price in-store to people who aren’t comparison shopping.

Good advice. I’ve noticed the same thing at Gander. Most retailers should price match. In fact, many will even price match Amazon I’ve noticed. But you gotta make the effort to point it out to em. They won’t do so on their own.

I have had Best Buy price match Amazon on lower priced items (under $100), I have not tried on any big ticket items.

I had this at Cabelas in Rogers…and pointed out the difference in price. They gladly gave me the lower online price but it helps to do your homework ahead of time and ask for the web pricing.

That’s the key there. You have to ASK for web-pricing everywhere now.

This isn’t new for Cabelas, but for Best Buy and Sears it absolutely IS new. The online price at Best Buy WAS the store price until recently.

I wonder if Target and Walmart have gone the same way?

I have found similar, checked Marine General’s website and they have the Marcum vs385 camera for $314 & free shipping on their website, and $340 plus $4.50 shipping on Amazon. I can understand a little difference but $30.50 difference. Do they pay Amazon 10%?

It wouldn’t make any difference, but I have $200 in Amazon money to spend.

10% sounds about right. Its not unlike selling an app in an App store, but they take 30% of your sales.

All you had to say was “the online price is cheaper” and they would honor the online price.

cant wait to go into cabelas this weekend.

I usually print out the online price I see and then bring it in. Specially useful for tackle and rods and stuff.

For Cabelas. Make your order on line and have it shipped to the store. Pick up. Take to car. Check items. If a return is needed, take the item in and they will refund on the spot.

I usually know what I want and if its online cheaper I allready know when I go to Cabelas, but if I just end up there and happen to buy something, which happens often,I will look it up on my phone before I checkout just to see if it happens to be online cheaper,if it is they allways give ya the deal as long as its not online only price.

We just bought a dishwasher from Sears, and saw the same thing. Not only was the listed price cheaper online, but they were giving an extra 10% off if you bought online. It stated that 10% could not be matched in the stores.

Another tip. Just before I checked out, I had the thought to do a google search for promotion codes at Sears. Turns out there was one out there for an additional $50 off appliances. I am guessing they wouldn’t honor that in a store either. It was not advertised.

I can see where this is going. Less manned stores.

Best Buy trying to con someone out of a few more bucks? Imagine that. “Restocking fee”, anyone?

I bet Fleet Farm doesn’t partake in that practice.

If you know Firebug, you could print out some really nice deals from any website to be price matched!

Even if the price is slightly higher at the register vs. online at Walmart it is worth shopping there just to people watch. The characters that shop at the Walmart near me are worth seeing once/wk.

Common practice almost everywhere. Our Local Walmart doesn’t price match their website. Pay more for on the shelf or order at the kiosk and wait for it to ship in???? Yet they will price match a scan From redlazer

I know for a fact best buy will price match. But you have to ask. This is normal. It costs a lot of money to keep inventory on the shelves. You also pay shipping so the cost is slightly more to you anyway. Going to the store they paid shipping.

Kind of along the lines of what you said… I dont know why people are getting mad about this. The brick and mortar stores are basically completely separate from the online stores for these big retailers. They have separate ads and marketing strategies and track sales separately. I def think they should price match, but dont expect the cashier to know what the price online is.

Just my .02 as a consultant in the retail industry. I don’t think “most” retailers are trying to ‘scam’ anyone. Most will honor the online price unless the online price is promotional in nature. Reason being is that most retailers have systems that cannot integrate together for the brick and mortar stores and online ‘virtual’ stores. It is common to see different groups in corporations maintaining the online prices than there are maintaining brick and mortar prices.

I work with several retailers that are trying to close that gap but throw in a million+ $$ price tag to do so and a soft economy for the past 5 years and you find most retailers opt to allow for price match instead and have the integration “fix” on their wish list.
