After several post on here about removing original grease and replacing it with better ( hot sauce ) I remembered my trouble doing this last spring. What product do you all use to remove the old grease? I think I tried either brake cleaner or carb cleaner and it discolored all the plastic parts it contacted. I ended up just removing as much of the old grease as I could with just a rag. I have read that sometime 2 different grease’s do not mix well. I want to find a way to get as much of the old grease out as possible before adding the new grease.

A great method that is very easy to do is Dawn dish soap the small parts.
Dawn will cut the grease very quickly. It is very mild and works on all parts.
Carb cleaner may eat some plastics.

We take apart the reels and pull all the plastic out of them. We then sonic clean them in a heated sonic cleaner. It is the best cleaning method I have every seen. Parts come out clean and with a quick rinse are ready to put back together.

Old grease will cause headaches later on.

WD will leave a residue. Alcohol is your best beat. Cuts the grease and doesn’t leave a residue and drys fast.

I’ve been using gun scrubber, works awsome doesn’t leave any residue and as far as I know it won’t harm any plastic or any finishes.

Last spring I bought a Ardent reel cleaner kit and I thought it worked real good, cleaned the parts real good and rinsed residue free.
