No kidding. I don’t have any kids, but if I did I’d be asking the same thing. They’re closing down the schools, but parents likely still have to work. Last time I checked, kids went to school INDOORS. Is it really that big of deal if it’s going to be -30 outside?

When are we going to start toughening up the youth of this country? I never got to stay home because it was too cold, too windy, too hot, too snowy. How about parents start to parent and make their children wear a WINTER Coat, HAT, GLOVES and WINTER boots- instead of pajamas-and get their lazy arses to school. No wonder this country is behind in education! How many times do I get to stay home because of the weather? NEVER!

It’s not really a “day off” We make them up at the end of the school year (in June) when the temperature is much nicer!

I never saw a cold closure as a kid either. Only heavy snow ruining the roads shut us down. Had to be at least a fast falling 8 incher at night to do it. On our day off we started by shoveling our own drive then headed out to shovel for money or go sledding.

This has to do more so with buses than anything else. Little Johnny is stop #1 for the bus route yet little Johnnys mom doesn’t want him waiting for bus outside (because of the cold weather…) so she keeps him inside until the bus shows up. Little Johnny then walks down the driveway when the bus shows up thus the bus starts two minutes late. This happens at almost every bus stop so by the time the bus gets to the last stop it’s 45 minutes late and if that last child stays outside (because mom/dad work…) he/she has been standing outside at -20 for close to 45 minutes. This scenario is a main reason for canceling school…RR

Boo Hoo! I had to stand at the bus stop to. Time for little Johnny to toughen up and mommy too! Every kid knows what time the bus is supposed to show up and 5 minutes won’t kill them if parents would make kids dress appropriately!

Don’t shoot the messenger…This info. comes from a buddy that owns an out-state school bus service and thats exactly how things go down on cold days. Parents fault everytime…

Temps -25 to -30 and wind chills making it -50 is plenty cold for anyone, let alone those wimpy kids these days. I may have hundreds of dollars in gore tex jackets, bibs, hats, gloves but my kids don’t. I expect about 99% of kids don’t have clothing near warm enough to handle 10 minutes in -5 let alone -25 plus the wind.

Since when do we trust weather forecasts 3 days in advance?

If the cold weather hits on Tuesday, will they close schools then too?

Has nothing to do with how tough or not so tough kids are nowdays…It’s called LIABILITY.

School’s and the Gov’t just protecting themselves with this call.

To many law suit happy folks and lawyers out there.

It’s snowing here in Grand Rapids. Wind plowing. All that fun stuff. Brought in another load of firewood. Wood fireplace is going and nice and toasty. Should be sitting in the Ice Castle on a lake somewhere but could not get away. Oh well. That’s winter for you.

I thought there was like 5 days cushion built into the school year for days like this?

Yes most likely. I would rather see them close now and allow me to get daycare lined up as the weather does not stop me from working because I also am self employed . As for my 8 year old daughter…… she’s tough enough and doesn’t need to prove it to me by sitting at the bus stop or if the bus breaks down on her normal 45 minute trip, who knows.

To each their own…. I’m sure we all walked 10 miles to school in 3 ft drifts uphill both ways… “back in the day”

People are seriously complaining and suggesting that 6 and 7 year-olds need to “toughen up” and wait outside in -50 wind chill?

    Seems like a logical stance.

What gets forgotten is there are a lot of crummy parents out there that are too busy with their drug of choice to bother with their children’s well being. I like talking about how tough I am too, but the gov made a good call.

I dislike this world of FEAR of the Weather Forecast were living in.

At least 9 times out of 10 when some Big WEATHER Event is Forecast, it fails, the forecast is wrong and nothing happens, especially when the forecast event is 3-4 days away as is the case with this Cold Front Forecast.

School Closings should be up to each individual school board and NOT the Governor or anybody else. Yes, a SAD, SAD World of people living in FEAR.

As Zig Ziglar once said: “F.E.A.R. = False Evidence Appearing Real”.

What is the difference between the people and school buses now compared to back in the 60’s & 70’s. They never closed school then for the Cold, yes, some kids didn’t make it to school as buses wouldn’t start nor run on unplowed roads.

I used to work on a Survey Crew and we worked outside unless the Air Temp. &/or Wind Chill went to more than -20f and then mainly because our electronic instruments failed to function properly, i.e.: The LCD Screens froze up.

If a school board says on Sunday night or Monday morning, were closing school, that were closing school tomorrow, that’s ok by me. but fearing something 3-4 days away if just succumbing to FEAR! Even then, if the school doesn’t close, it’s still a parents right to keep their children home at the time, but having a Governor close all schools is wrong and just succumbing to the fear of the forecast!

    Just my nickel of venting!

I don’t know why I am letting this bother me, but here we go:

To those of you that would advise the kids to ” toughen up ” I will offer you the following statement: Your parents loved you and had your well being in mind. There are many kids in this state whose parents treat them as a means to an end. These kids show up to school in shorts because mom couldn’t be bothered to dress them for school when it is five below. Perhaps this sounds like liberal bawling to you, but it happens. I didn’t vote for Dayton and I won’t in the next election, but I think he got this one right. Kids don’t need more government programs, they need parents who aren’t derelicts.
