Is the iPad air worth the extra cash over the 2?

The iPad 2 is three generations back, you have
iPad original
iPad 2
iPad 3 discontinued
iPad with Retina Display
iPad Air
Looking on Apple’s website the Retina display model is the best deal at $449
You will not find any price difference since Apple makes retailers sell them at a certain cost, what you will find is a $50 gift card from the retailer. I think Target and possibly Walmart was doing it.
Thanks for the input. I was also curious if there were any small retailers that may be willing to swing a deal.
With Target if you use a Target debit or Credit Card there is an additional 5% off. You can also set up a Target card to withdraw directly from your checking account and still save the 5%. We did that about 18 months ago. For every $100.00 you spend you get an immediate $5.00 off the bill. It does add up if you shop there.
Unless you are already heavily entangled in the Apple ecosystem, I really would encourage you to look at the Android options.
The problem with Apple is it’s like the Hotel California. You can check out anytime you’d like, but you can never leave. All your content and apps are incompatable with all brands except Apple. So you’re locked in unless you want to lose your stuff.
Take a good look at the new Kindle Fire or the other Android tablets. There’s nothing the iPad does that the current gen of Droids don’t do and they do it for less and don’t lock you in to one overpriced brand.

Its tough to find deals on electronic products like that. Just like game consoles I think they are required to sell them at a certain price.
I am going to assume you are just looking at Apple Tablets. If not, one advantage Android has is multiple hardware manufacturers. Of course, that is also their disadvantage. And even with say the Google Nexus tabs, the price is pretty much set too. I know I could get a slightly better deal from Micro Center, but they cannot advertise publicly. You had to add it to the cart.
Price difference from a 7 or even 8″ tablet to 10″ is huge. But again, assumed you a locked into Apple it doesn’t matter. But others might find the info helpful.
Why didn’t you ask me yesterday inbetween pencil perch when you were in the shack beside me.
I’m a spur of the moment kind of guy. Out Xmas shopping today and it crossed my mind.
Last minute shopping is what I do best.
When you guys say locked in, does that mean that I have to own a apple computer?
We both have fruit phones and I have mine because employer provides one.

No, you can use it with a PC. I believe all the syncing and stuff is done through iTunes.
I just got back from my marathon this morning. Bring on the beer!

No, you don’t need to own an Apple computer.
The problem is that once you start buying apps and content from Apple, you are largely locked in to Apple-brand tablets to use that content on. Forever.
So you and Apple are basically trapped in your own little scene from Brokeback Mountain. You could end up with tears in your eyes and saying to your iPad, “I wish I knew how to quit you!”
With Android devices, you are not locked in to any specific brand of tablet. As long as it’s running a supported version of the Android OS, you can move your content or apps onto any brand of device.

Let me rephrase. In order to be what you guys call “locked in” does that mean that it only own apple products including the computer.
As far as phones and apps, yes we are an apple household.
I think I understand. Since we only own fruit phones, all of our apps are apple and not transferable.

I don’t know what your rephrasing means? I am also not sure what you mean by transferable? You mean between Apple devices? Where would you transfer them to?
I think I understand what you mean by transferable. If you mean having the same app on the phone and iPad without having to buy it twice, I assume it is like Android. As long as you are under the same account, yes, you can share between devices YOU own. But you can’t share between you and your wife.
Kindle fire HDX 8.9 is just the right size and works great
android power and it enable you to get all kinds of apps for free or a small fee
Funny your also locked into android as they don’t share apps with apple. Apples customer service is second to none and last. Worth the few extra bucks IMO. Once you go apple you won’t go back anyway.
Not mentioned are refurbished Apple tablets as an option. I don’t think you save that much money when buying one though. But a savings is a savings. I believe Apple sells them directly through the Apple store.

That’s like saying your locked into Windows when you buy PC software. The OS is different, that’s why they aren’t compatible.
I had a Macbook Pro I used for work. It was a model known to have video board issues. Took my work forever to get them to replace it and we had Applcare. I think Apple didn’t want to admit a problem.
I’ve used Apple at work several times and won’t go back or buy any Apple product for personal use. Too proprietary-centric and closed for me.
There are good and bad to both. Everyone needs to choose to their own needs.

But there are hundreds of different devices over several mfg that run android, there are a handful that run IOS and they are all one mfg.
Never heard anyone with a ipad that wished they had a kindle or galaxy

OK, here’s one: My wife. She bought into the Apple hype and got an iPad and then realized that the more content she bought, the more she was locked into Apple-only devices.
And then the last straw was the forced-conversion of Apple users off of Google Maps to Apple’s own product. Which sucked big time and was an epic fail. Never knew the Nile river was in South America? It is according to Apple, but hey it’s Apple so just drink the cool-aid and don’t ask any questions.
Choice is good.

Thanks for all the discussion. It helped me make a decision. Here’s what I decided on.
You can share all your apps with multiple devices even if they’re not on the same iTunes account. I currently have five different Apple devices sorry six different Apple devices and I sync them to my PC and then transfer those items to the four different iTunes accounts that I hold with the wife and kids. So I buy one iTunes app from app store and I can transfer that to the other three iTunes devices as long as I sync them to my non-Apple PC.
You were going to get the Ford and Chevy debate here. Apple versus android. The thing is get what you’re used to you all ready have the iPhones you better off getting iPad because the iPads and iPhones work so well together that you will be very happy with what you have in the end.
I had owned three android devices and switch the Apple sheerly because I find that the reliability behind any of the different manufactures of android devices aftertime became very buggy and slow down the processing of the apps and shut the phone down all of the sorts since only my Apple devices that I switched to ask me a year ago I have never been happy and most likely will never go back and right as it sits today
Happy shopping and I recommend the ipad.
There are so many free apple apps that you hardly ever have to pay for one and if you do it’s all of .99 to $1.99 for most. You would have to buy a lot of apps to really make much of a loss.
There is a great app called apps gone free that gives you normally pay apps for free.
I used to hate Apple and still don’t like a few things like iTunes, but they make a great product and have real Americans in Tech Support

You guys keep bringing up tech support. I don’t know what that is like, I’ve never needed it with my Android. So I guess I can’t speak on that.
Just having fun.
Merry Christmas to all!
ps. I was happy to see Apple finally upgrade that ugly 90s UI with glass icons.
