I have an out dated tile floor in the bathroom, looking to uremodel the bathroom. Can I tile over the old tile, or is it better to remove the old?

Its a pain in the arse but your best bet is remove it and put down a good quality underfloor base made for tile, then tile on top.

    X3,

One addition I would make is install “EASY HEAT” in the Tile Floor Grout.

    Easy Heat link

We remodeled ours in 2005, best investment I’ve made. Tiles are always cold, but with this setup, you have a thermostat to control it. Leave it on just enough to take chill off floor in Summer and Winter crank it up. Wife goes and sits on edge of tub with bare feet on the floor to warm up. It’s wonderful on cold winter mornings too.

We used the cable version due to L-Shape bathroom, they also have Mats for rectangular shaped rooms.

    Good Luck

He is right. You can use the mats in an L shaped room you just have to cut it right. Pour a self-leveling base.

Yes! You must remove the old tile. Don’t let anyone tell you to tile over it, it’ll be nothing but trouble.

BTW, an ice fishing ice chisle works great for removeing tile.

And I totally agree re the electric under-tile heat. I did the SunTouch systems from Home Depot in our 2 bathrooms and our tile entry. FANTASTIC! Nothing better than having warm feet in the morning. Seriously, don’t do tile without it.

Once I get the old tile up, does a person have to get all the old mortar up?

Hilti te54 and a chisel blade. Takes the tile right off. A quality leveler skim coat will clean up the holes and mortar left..In the middle of doing 5 rooms right now

Hopefully that Suntouch wasn’t backordered 4-6 weeks like the rest of your house
