Heading to Aberdeen SD for a last minute pheasant hunt.
I need some suggestions on warm, lightweight boots that i could pick up locally since i dont have time for Cabelas.
Sounds like subzero mornings and single digit days

Just swing into a Gander if one is near. they have great deals on rubber insulated hunting boot right now. They had 2000 gram insulates, if they ahd them in my size i probably would have picked them up.
It depends on budget and how often you going to use them.IMO

Walking, I would think 600 grams would be ok, with some heavy socks Rockys or Danner or the Irish Setters Good luck and have fun

Just bought a pair of 800 Danners and so far am very happy. Took a little work to break in the left shoe. Gander Mountain had a nice pair of Irish Setter with 800g and gortex that has my eye also, little lighter and about 1″ shorter than the Danner so you don’t have to always wear a taller sock. I have found if I go over 800 my feet get too hot when walking for birds.

Birds are down all over the state, but from my experience this season you are heading to the right area!!! I tried to avoid the drive north over thanksgiving and hunted on prime beautiful private land in the south end of the state and it was honestly sad the basic extinction of birds in the 40-50 mile radius of ground we covered in the field and road hunting. Used to be stuffed!!!!! Road hunting may be your best bet this late in season, PM me if you are interested in any other info.

To honest, I don’t think you need real warm hunting boots if you are contistantly walking…I was just in SD a couple weeks ago in some pretty cold mornings (10 deg or so); I have a pair of real lighweight Danners with hardly any insulation and my feet never got cold. I was wearing just a heavier sock with them and walking road ditches all day.

If I was not walking and sitting for long periods of time I would definitely want a warmer boot though.

They don’t exist if you are sitting (aside from the big mickey mouse military boots!) but walking,, I Agree with big G.

    Bunny Boots. Love ’em.

For pheasant hunting, agree with above members. Heavy ins. boots not really necessary when you’re walking a lot. I’d think 600-800 grams would be plenty. Personally, I wear uninsluated Danner Proghorns.

The BIG factor I’ve found is the boot fit with socks. Cramming in an extra layer of socks in an attempt to make boots warmer almost always has the opposite effect. By restricting circulation, it makes your feet colder.

If you ever need to do long sits in frigid weather go out and buy arctic shield boot insulators. You can toss in a hand warmer and your feet will stay toasty. Even in single digit temps. I pack them in for deer season and wearthem in the boot during winter fishing.

Anything 400-800 gram in a quality boot should be fine, plus you cold use them when its warmer too. I’ve hunted in those temps out there before and I use 400 gram. Most important out there is windproof clothing as 10mph there feels like 20mph here! You cold also try the cheap footwarmers.

Good luck, was out there last weekend and had a pretty good hunt.
