Can I ask how long your leader will be?? Might dictate how long your rod should be.
Great question. This style of fishing is new to me. Historically all I have done is vertical job for eyes. I would love to get your thoughts as to what length should go with what length rod

Since rigging is fairly new to you on the river you might want to join the st.croix valley walleye league and learn a little more about the river.

Great people and friends that provide a lot of help to make it a fun river to fish now.
Just me but if I were you I wouldn’t buy a 1 trick pony. You can do almost everything in the riverbook, and I suppose lakebook as well with a 6-8 mxf spinning rod whether you are a beginner or a pro. I also recommend a medium action first for you, especially if you are relatively new to the technique with boat control. It may allow you to get cozy with the technique with a bit heavier weights at first eventually working your way to much-much lighter weights. I hope you drill em’ either way!

Thanks a bunch. This is actually my second walleye pole. My primary pole is an Avid 6’8″M XF that I have been using for many years vertical jigging the Mississippi and other lakes in the area with excellent success.
This new pole will actually be my primary Pokegema lake trolling pole for the slip rigs that I have seen so many people using… About 3/8 ounce slip weight with a 5 foot leader and blown up floating crawler in tow 0.5-1mph along the weed line at 17 foot. It seems this approach would be better with a longer lighter power rod.

Ahhhh I hear ya now! Ubet- get a straight up riggin stick then! I thought you were going to be on the croix and sipp mostly- I still think ur avid could take care of business but if u are like me and like to buy rods for fun at times to get a Lil more enjoyment out of a technique that will be used frequently- the 7-6 mlexf sounds like fun to me!
A longer rod with a softer tip will allow you to drop the rod back after getting bit and allowing the fish to take the bait a bit before setting the hook with out the fish feeling the rod and dropping the bait.A medium to medium light fast action 1 piece 7.6 foot St. Croix rod would work great.
