Hauling 10 foot wide object on MN roads.

Does anyone know what is legally required in order to transport a 10-foot wide object on Minnesota roads?

Specifically, I’m looking to move a 10 foot wide x 12 foot deep shed about 90 miles. This would include crossing multiple county lines, of course, but all in Minnesota.

The weight isn’t the issue, I have plenty of trailer to safely haul it and now that the ground is frozen, getting it loaded wouldn’t be bad either. What I’m looking for is just the legal end to determine if this is too much of a hassle.

What kind of permits (if any) are needed and where would one get them? Signs, flashing lights, etc required?

    Thanks

You would need a permit, 8.5 ft wide is max without a permit. I don’t believe you would need an escort vehicle. Check with MN Dot.

Looks like you will need mirrors that allow you to see at least 200 feet behind and red 18 x 18″ flags on the corners at the widest points.

    Obtaining Oversize/Overweight Permits.

The road authority over whose roadway you wish to travel must issue the Oversize/ Overweight

Transportation Permit. For Interstate or State Trunk Highways, the road authority is Mn/DOT. For local

roads, the road authority can be the county, city, township or municipality. Mn/DOT does not issue

permits for travel over local roads

Application forms for a permit for use of state highways (Interstates, U.S. Highways, and MN Trunk

Highways), and additional information regarding oversize and overweight load restrictions can be

    obtained at: http://www.dot.state.mn.us/cvo/oversize/oversize.html

Rear Visibility Required. Vehicle shall be equipped with a rear view mirror(s) that provides the driver with a view of the highway for a distance of at least 200 feet to the rear of the vehicle.

Flags. Red or orange warning flags are to be displayed when load is more than 3 feet ahead of the front bumper or 4 feet or more beyond the rear of the vehicle; when a vehicle or load exceeds 9 feet in width; or when a vehicle/load exceeds legal vehicle length. Flags must be 18 inches square and in good repair. Flags must be secured at the extreme tips of front and rear overhang, at the widest points and each corner of over width loads and fully visible to traffic.

Many Counties may require their own permits or at minimum, Notification.

Those are the regulations for a commercial vehicle. I’m not sure if there’s a difference between comm/non-commercial vehicle requirements. That would be something worthy of a call or email to the DOT.

Personally, if you can take back roads and stay off major highways/interstates, I wouldn’t worry too much about it if you’re only going 90 miles. If a cop pulls you over, play dumb.

I doubt ignorance of the law will get you far today, maybe 40 years ago but they don’t play games any more.

Better check the Height of your load too, when loaded. don’t want to hit a overhead light pole or wires.

That can be a bigger problem than the width.

I read your post and then looked at your new avatar and they go together perfectly! It’s like the pic was taken as soon as you said that.

    Thanks for the replies.

Probably too much of a hassle for a DIY job. A couple of miles or something, maybe, but 90 miles is too far.

Check with Oak & Things up in Anoka. They sell goobs of those sheds. Maybe they have “a guy” that you can hire for the job.

Put a bean head or corn head on it, paint it green and say its your combine. Nobody will bother you
