I think I will need shocks, struts and brakes on a 2007 G6 GT at 68,000 miles….I am scared to see the bill.

Where is the $1500 to $2000 button? Better sell that one. List it in like new condition.
December 2, 2013 at 11:22 am #1368098Well that is a tough one. Had a friend that was quoted $570 to fix her brakes and needed everything new. I put in a new set of caliper pins for $26 and all was fine.
Sean ReamesPosts: 61December 2, 2013 at 11:45 am #1368109Well are you doing the work or are you having it done. I just put new struts on a 95 lesabre. I purchased the monroe quick struts that includes the springs and all, life time guarantee. Cost was $400, plus $69 for an alignment.
To have them done was about $650 – $800 depending on the place, also need to add a front end alignment. You have to have the alignment done!
Brakes are about $200 an axle to have them done. If you do it yourself new rotors and pads are about $80 an axle.
December 2, 2013 at 11:45 am #1368111Getting brakes done by garages has got to be the biggest racket there is.
Automatically they will just put in new rotors.
Brakes have to be the easiest thing to do as well. It would be good for you to learn how to do them.December 2, 2013 at 11:49 am #1368114Quote:

WARNING!! Don’t buy anything from Mike
December 2, 2013 at 1:00 pm #1368128You know the thing that really kills me is that never since the ancient Phoenicians to modern day has any mechanic ever been able to just resurface the roters. They are always too fare gone.
I swear I could drive a new car off thenlot and straight to the shop and they would say sorry the roters are shot.

Time is money and turning them takes way too long.
Back in my days of being gainfully employed, IF I could catch the brake pads in time, I’d merely replace the pads and normally not even mess with the rotors. If they hit metal on metal, it was just about as cheap to buy new ones vs turning the old. I pick up parts on the way home and could do pads and rotors while dinner was being made ready. Normally the back brakes last about 3:1 for the fronts. In 55+ yrs of driving, I’ve yet to pay someone to do my brakes. jerrAnonymousInactivePosts: 0December 2, 2013 at 1:58 pm #1368138I changed my own brakes on my pickup, had all 4 rotors turned because one was warped.
5k miles later I have a warped rotor again (different corner) I pull the rotors off and buy new. I haven’t had a problem for 20k.
Now my question for the car guys out there. If you turn a warped rotor don’t you just invite it to happen again? The way I see it, you are removing more metal from one place than another and that would cause uneven heat on the rotor causing it to warp.
Sorry to hi-jack the thread. I would guess $1000+
December 2, 2013 at 2:16 pm #1368143Quick serch on AdvanceAutoparts.com found 2 sets rotor front/back $100, preloaded struts $179 ea and shocks $35
Add code A124 and save another 30%December 2, 2013 at 2:24 pm #1368149Quote:

For the cost difference between turning and new, I always put on new.
Check Rockauto.com for good prices.

Easy DIY project. Save the $$$ if you have any skill at all.
It takes experience to do this kind of work. Preceded by training/learning.
December 2, 2013 at 2:45 pm #1368154I agree that on light trucks its penny’s more to just buy new. Unfortunately heavier trucks its about $150 difference for one side.
December 2, 2013 at 4:04 pm #1368174This post is a good example of how people like to complain just to complain and that you can never make everyone happy. There are many reasons that you can’t normally resurface rotors today, here are a couple;
people want better mpg- cut weight and make the rotors lighter
people want lower prices – castings are sold by the pound, make them lighter
people don’t want to die from cancer – remove asbestos so that now the only heat resistant materials are harder than the rotors and they wear fasterThere are give and takes with everything in life, you don’t like it, stop complaining and come up with a solution.
December 2, 2013 at 4:55 pm #1368181For what its worth, I wasn’t complaining. I was merely asking a question.

Seems like pretty low miles for all of that.
My exact thoughts.
December 3, 2013 at 10:44 am #1368333Under $500 wins!!!!!….sort of.
Front brakes were decent, needs rear. The shock/strut noise that I heard a creeking from the front when it was in the teens for temps is gone with 30s and wet weather. So that might still be another bill.
Thanks for playing, I guess the kids will get xmas this year after all.

I can not see putting shocks in. I did this for years I run a Mobil Station and you would not believe the people who got ripped off. Check around there are a lot of crooks out there.
Send me a PM and I will set you strait on your repairs.
