Fishing different lakes will not only test your patience, but your determination as well. Park Falls/Butternut, Wisconsin lies 30 min south of Ashland and might possibly hold a few honey holes for early ice fishing. I’ll be eagerly exploring a small group of lakes in the area, enjoying the early sunday sunrise.

Family happen to be close to these possibly hidden gems and I’m curious if anyone has made the attempt to fish these bodies of water. There is no reason to remain so close and not give it a try, right? How else are the great ice experiences created if you don’t place yourself in a different environment every once and a while? Let me know if you’ve made it out to the north woods in Wisconsin!

    Limits to you all! Cheers

Heading that way on December 22-23 for a few days of fishing. Staying in Rice Lake at my son’s house.

Butternut is actually about 50 miles south of Ashland and Park Falls is about 5 miles further south.

4″-6″ of ice is being reported on Butternut Lake. 4″ of ice is being reported on the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage.

Apologies! You are correct; it is a bit farther than 30mins. Beautiful area to explore though that is for sure! We ended up seeing a little less fish than we had hoped, but the calm, warm weather made up for that. I had ended up fishing the northern end of Butternut Lake and the ice was quite safe until you were close to the stream that enters the lake near the boat landing. It was about 2 – 2.5 on Sunday evening in some of those areas closer to the mouth. A couple people had their snowmobiles out on the ice but never stopped moving and I don’t blame em haha. We had heard of a few great catches sunday evening closer to 12′ in the north end so I’ll have to swing around soon and tighten up that line!

    Cheers
