I took a small buck Sunday hunting with a buddy. I wasn’t going to shoot him and let him walk within 5 yards before he seen me, when he turned to run he showed obvious signs of being wounded. While butchering him I found two old wounds. The worst of the two somebody had attempted to shoot him In The chest and missed their mark by maybe a half Inch, this is not a good shot to take. your vital area on a frontal shot is very small and can result in a wounded deer like this. Moral here is Wait for a good shot and you will get your deer.

P.S. this deer would have been a dandy next year had he made it, and i was not pleased to use my tag on this deer knowing there are bigger deer out there. but i guess maybe one of those bigger deer will make it to be even BIGGER for next years season!

Nice deer! Sorry t wasn’t the one you were looking for. That is part of the reason I no longer deer hunt. Primarily it.s because of not having a secluded area to go and it puts me out there with the shooters and not hunters. Listening to the landscape on opening morning you can easily Identify who is who. Alot of people are planning on missing there 1st shot because they are already pulling the trigger on there 2nd.
We were always taught to respect our animal and make sure it a kill shot period. I watched alot of them walk away.
Thanks by the way for taking me back to the woods. Might have to take it up again.

That’s a dandy deer any way you look at it and you did a good thing taking a wounded animal. My hats off to you on this and yes, there are bigger deer and surely one will come in time. Good work Drew.

Bigger antlers, don’t make it taste any better. Nice buck, I wouldn’t hesitate on that one.

    Thats a small buck?

I shot a small 8 yesterday that was limping through the woods. The rack was nothing close to that. One thing to watch with shooting those wounded deer is watch for broad heads. About 10 years ago my dad sliced open his hand pretty good on a wounded deer. He found a broad head in the deer I had shot yesterday to. Luck for him this time it was before he got cut.

Good for you to do that. Over the years I’ve done that on two occasions. One was a doe that I think must had been hit by a vehicle. the other was an early season buck ( 10 pt) which coulda used another year (or two) as well, but respectable none-the-less….that one you got there, respectable as well.

I hear you, I’ve had to do it many times over the years for the neighbors. The thing that bothered me was that some times they never even bothered to track it. I would drop it on the property line waiting for them to come and get it and no one would show up:(
