Crestliner… I’m Dissappointed

To start off, has anyone had warranty work done on a Crestliner boat 04 or older anytime in the past 5 years? Or better yet, have you been denied your warranty claim?

So my ’04 Fish Hawk is in need of transom repair and my rear deck is rotted out. To be honest, after about 5 years of owning my boat, these are things I figured would happen someday.

I am the original owner of the boat, purchased new in ’04. I contacted 2 local Crestliner repair centers and they have both told me my boat was denied warranty coverage. Both reapir shops are shocked and have never heard of this before.

Here’s Crestliner’s story; Genmar Industries who wrote my warranty policy in 2004 had filed for bankruptcy in 2007. This somehow voids my warranty. I looked at my warranty policy and see no mention of Genmar Industries, only Crestliner Inc.

Has anyone dealt with this? Any sugestions? Other than legal action.

I ran into a similar situation when looking for replacement parts that I wanted to pay for. Crestliner abandoned their customers when they went through bankruptcy. Happy with my boat but will never buy another Crestliner because of it.

I have a friend who has a late 90’s crestliner fishhawk. The lids on his compartments started to rot out a few years back (not completely sure how far back) due to not using marine grade plywood. Crestliner replaced everything no questions asked.

I’m not disappointed with the boat, just Crestliner. Your boat has no ties with cestliner so you’ve got nothing to worry about. Just as long as you understand the responsibilities that go with owning a boat with carpet and wood flooring.

So, how does my 2004 Crestliner differ from your 2004 Crestliner?

I’ve had my Crestliner in 2 times for warranty work and it is an 04′. I always took mine to the repair shop at where they used to build them.

Have you called customer service yet? I will have to say years ago I had a snowmobile issue and 2 dealers told me they contacted the manufacture and they would not warranty. So I made a call to the company and low and behold I had all issues repaired in 2 days at the dealer that told me no? Funny how things work.

Crestliner CS was my first contact and that’s where I was first told of this. The 2 repair shops basically confirmed it.

I have since written a polite email describing my situation and am hoping for a favorable reply.

I was told by one shop to just put a little leverage on them an they may cave.

If you just bought the boat , the warranty is not transferable so your boat doesn’t exist according to Crestliner. You’ll never have to deal with them.

I think he was getting at the problems you are experiencing with your boat. He probably is not happy to hear that you are having transome issues. I’m just guessing.

I should maybe mention that I use the crap out of this boat. Many miles and hours on this boat. It’s also stored outdoors covered 100% of the time.

Crestliner was bought by Brunswick. Lund is anouther. I’ve heard the older boats are better built then the new ones. Brunswick should still honor the warranty and if not boycott Brunswick too. just a thought

Crestliner should honor my boat. I don’t care who owns them. My warranty policy makes no determination who owns Crestliner. It only states Crestliner inc.

If it were me, I think I would at least seek the advice of a competent attorney. You may be SOL, but I’d rather have an attorney make that determination.

Anyone remember what happened to brand new Chryslers when the company went bankrupt in the early 80’s?

Today you have a warranty, tomorrow you don’t have a warranty on a brand new car. Still Chrysler…although we (taxpayers) bailed them out and Lee Iaccoa (sp?) pulled them out of it with the K cars.

Sucks but that’s the way it is.

I don’t totally disagree Brian. If the warranty policy did say that Genmar wrote it I’d be less dissappointed. Also, if you’re going to buy a failing company, was the additional risk of losing potential repeat customers worth it? I can’t imagine the cost of repairing a few boats exceeds the cost of selling a few more boats.

That’s why I don’t own a boat manufacturing company. Yet.

Btw,I have a boat for sale.

When companies that are in default/bankruptcy are purchased there normally is a stated responsibility date agreed upon by the court/ new company.
I just contacted Redfield Rifle scopes because my “lifetime warrantee” 2009 Variable scope failed me last week. They were bought by Leupold recently and the disclaimer I received via email stated they would NOT warrantee scopes purchased before 2010.

    My Crestliner 1750 FishHawk SC is a 2003 and still solid as a rock…(and I guide with this boat) probably 100 days a year X 10 years…
I do not feel that Crestliner owes me a thing at this point…I am more than satisfied with the longevity off the product.

No matter what your warrantee states, the courts support product warrantee disclaimers when a company changes hands… all the time…
Let us know how you come out…

Just goes to show that the economy is worse than we thought

Tom, other than the transom, I don’t feel that crestliner owes me anything either. But the transom could make my boat inoperable some day, maybe soon. I did buy the boat with a lot of emphasis on the warranty. I understand the legal factors behind a bankruptcy, but not many consumers would see it that way no matter how you explain it to them. That could lead to further lost business. I’m hoping that they do what’s “right” and honor the warranty that Crestliner Inc promised me back in 2004.

    Quick update.

I spoke to the warranty manager and found out that my warranty is still valid but the warranty for my particular year boat does not cover the proposed repairs.

The info that I received from Crestliner was not completely accurate. I’m going to read thru the warranty policy again to make sure this new info is accurate.

This info is much more satisfying than the bankruptcy story. I agreed to the warranty policy when I purchased the boat.

Not sure what to think about this info, but I have spoken to john and the ONLY reason I haven’t considered one of his boats is because he doesn’t offer anything over 17′.

This thread was intended to gather advice on how to handle a Crestliner warranty claim rejection.

Keep us posted on the progress please. My brother has a 1850 sport fish I’m thinking it is a 2006 and the floor In a few spots is squishy. So you are not alone but he has not bothered with trying to claim a warranty since he seems to not care but that is his deal.
    Good luck to you.
It seems like a pain in the butt to get what you need fixed and unfortunate when a company has issues the customer takes it in the shorts.

I realize my original post’s message came across poorly… not meant to cause any bad feelings… just ignore me please.

It meant to be a “I really get tired of the really big companies that out grow their customer base and I feel for your bad situation” comment… nothing more- nothing less

It may be that due to the bankruptcy, Crestliner (Genmar) shed their liabilities(ex. your warranty.) Brunswick bought the assets of Genmar, but not the liabilities.
Not sure if this is what happened, but it could be possible from an accounting standpoint.
