Deer Suet

So who else saves there deer fat and hangs it for the winter birds? Been a fun week of watching the peckers and blue jays fighting each other over the stuff we hung in the front yard. Once and a great while we will even get a pileated pecker in on it but none yet this year.

So this year the wife has me hang a carcass in the back yard. Think if she had her way it would be right out in the front next to the other feeders. She is kinda a up north gal and had to explain to her the neighbors might not appreciate that as much as her. So in the back yard it went about 10′ on the side of a tree. So far no birds have found yet but its only been up for a day. It is driving my dog nuts and he seems to spend most of his day out there trying to figure out how to get it. We will give it a week or so and see if the birds do find it.

She wants me to save the 2nd carcass for her mom. Told her only if I can wrap it up and put it under the tree at here sisters house where we have xmas.

    Anyone else hanging carcasses to?

I hung parts up last year (including a head after cutting off antlers that my daughter said was gross!) and birds picked it clean especially the black capped chickadees…

    Mike,
I always used to hang the rib cages when I lived up north. I am in South St. Paul now and still hang the rib cages in the back yard trees. I had three back there last year. Lots of nuthatches, woodpeckers, chickadees pecking at it all winter. Nothing but bones left by spring. I hung them out of sight from any neighbors to not cause a fuss. Most of my neighbors are deer hunters so they wouldn’t really care I suppose.

No carcasses allowed on the premises….FW rules.

Deer suet is getting lots of attention.

I always put my deer carcasses within sight of my bow stand to keep me entertained while sitting on stand, hoping to catch a glimpse of the timberwolves that are around. This year the carcass I put out went missing almost immediately turns out I got a cougar on my property, neighbor got a good shot of it on his trail camera. I live just north of brainerd near the river.

Gee Glenn, I didn’t now you had any luck getting a deer even. Unless the union state workers peel one off a highway shoulder for you. You know, fender tender bambi.

Bear fat is great as a bird food supplement. Rendered bear fat makes the best grease for frying home-made donuts too.

Must be union made boots. My non-union made boots are as dry as dry can be in any weather.

We trim all the fat off the carcass and save all the internal suet. When we are done grinding the burger and sausage meat we grind all of the fat and suet. The ground fat goes in 5 qt. ice cream pails and into the freezer. I made a suet feeder by boring twelve 1″ diameter holes an inch deep into a peeled popple log and couple of feet long with pegs beneath the holes for perches. We mix some cheap peanut butter with some thawed suet and pack that into the holes and hang it in the tree near the sunflower feeder. We have to refill it almost daily once the cold weather hits. The birds love it.
