    Hello –

We recently got an inside house dog and I have been doing some reading on what the best flea product to use monthly on the dog. Frontline is the big name but boy some reviews just say stay away. What do you guys recommend? Frontline? Advantage? Advantix? Different product. I just don’t want to waste my money as these products are expensive. Thanks for your help.

We found Advantix to be the best for our three spoiled inside upland hunting dogs. That does not say they are tick free, in fact I pulled a tick off just last week, but rather minimum ticks through the season. Never had fleas on any of them!

We use Parastar Plus from Novartis for our lab. Get is at the vet.

My pup was recently diagnosed with Anaplasmosis. It’s a common blood-born bacteria from deer tick bites. She’s been religiously treated with Frontline her entire life. Problem with this stuff is that they have to get bit b4 it kills the tick. I’m blaming Frontline for her getting infected. Next year I’ll be using something else, what it will be, I’m not certain, just not Frontline. I’ve seen several that kill on contact, I’ll be looking into them. She’s currently on 300 mg 2x daily of Doxycycline. Prognosis is excellent. jerr

I use PetArmor (buy it at Menards). Works real well – you can tell when it wears off as my dog is a tick magnet.

I haven’t applied it for a while and I just pulled a tick off her yesterday… Who’da thunk I’d be finding ticks on the dog in mid-November. I’m convinced there’s a new breed of super-tick’s here in Stillwater as this year has been incredibly bad.

Vectra 3D is the best product out. Most ticks around this area are resistant to frontline, etc.

Advantix for us! Awesome stuff, but stay away if you have cats.

I use Frontline. Great on fleas but some tics get through. I stop using it and heart worm meds in the winter.

Another thing to be aware of in selecting your canine tick preventative is whether or not you have cats in the house. Permethrin based solutions can be toxic to cats.
