Anyone else sad to see the overall discussion of fishing related to ice somehow? Hey I am happy for all you that enjoy some ice, but wondering if there are others like myself who loathe the whole idea. Love winter, hate ice. Hope the river stays open for most of the winter this year, it got dreadfully long last one.

Love winter and hate ice? If you take away hockey and ice fishing, I am moving to the FLA.

I definitely DON’T feel sad about winter and ice coming around the corner. For me, living in Ohio, the last two winters have been dreadful. Almost NO ice at all, which makes for a very crappy ice fishing season. I was able to get out once last year and the very next day it was all open water. The year before that there wasn’t any ice to speak of. As I tell everyone I talk to about ice fishing, you can be a warm as you want to be out on the ice. Sitting in a shanty with a heater, you might just find yourself peeling off layers.

Not sure I see the problem. You live close to Pool 4. 365 days of open water.

I agree, open water fishing is much better than ice fishing. But up here, that’s all we got in Jan. except……

With all that said, I will miss Pool 4. But I do love being back. Missed it up here.

For those that don’t like cold or ice 2013 was one of the toughest years in memory. Jan-May snowed, June was a washout with flooding and winter hit again in Oct-? That left 3 months of decent soft water weather for the year… I see a lot of people down in the dumps with no Spring or Fall this year… Seems we’re becoming a 2 season climate..

Yep, with pool 2, pool 4 and the Monticello stretches of river near by open water in the winter months is never to far away. Granted a guy might have to pick and choose on when to get between the really cold days but one can still get their fix every now and again until the warmer months come.

Its also a good time of year to take a vacation south for some warm weather fishing.

this has always been the land of:
    almost winter
    really winter
    still winter
    and … road construction

Although I hate to see the short tee shirt season go, it just opens up a new season for me that I’m ok with.

I’ll be seeing more friends (and Jeff Huberty) at the Everts Bait Shop starting this Sunday. That’s what I call fishing through others.

I have plans on getting into some blue gills for my Favorite Mother that’s staying with us until January. (Helping with the new granddaughter while the Favorite Daughter is recovering from back surgery)

The Lx-9 with the camera recorder should be arriving soon. That’s going to open up the bottom of Pool 4 again and I’m hoping to get some more and better video this year.

So yeah, it’s a bitter sweet time of year for me. But one Spam Slider and I have happy feet again.

    I’ll survive.

BK, what do you mean you’ll see more of Jeff at Everts? I thought he put his boat away. Jeff?

I am lucky to have the river so close. Many a times last year would find my spot with a nice 15′ ice shelf on it, and after some stomping with the boots, couple well placed logs to break the sides would watch that ice mass float down river while tying up my line. Maybe I should stop trying to fight ice and start fishing it.

I don’t hate ice, snow, winter & ice fishing but having said that, I do prefer open water fishing from my boat. I don’t own a snowmobile or atv so the boat gives me an advantage of mobility that I don’t have on the ice.

Oh yes, I can see BK in his much younger years. Before he stood in doorway with nothing but his shoes and a t-shirt and pink cap holding a pistol.
