The hippies must be manipulating the markets to punish big oil. I dont know how these companies can make a profit at these levels.

We need government regulations to stop the hippies from continuing to drive down gas prices. Stop the madness.

I was under the impression that when things started freezing over, you’re getting closer to heaven

Hopefully it isn’t a precursor to further economic stagnation. GDP was up to 2.8% last quarter. Woo hoo. Hopefully they don’t end up adjusting that down.

Economic indicatros are always a mixed bag and one number never gives a complete picture.

The jobs report out today shows employement increased by almost twice the preditcted pace and numbers for the previous 2 months were upgraded.

    From the WSJ:

The economy added 204,000 jobs in October — almost double the consensus — and hiring for September and August were revised up by a combined 60,000, according to the Labor Department. The unemployment rate ticked up to 7.3% from 7.2%.

So why did unemployment increase? Probably the long-term unemployed who had given up actively seeking work, and were therefore not part of the past numbers, are back in the market because the picture has improved.

Fuel and all other commodity prices are not directly driven by current or past events. They are driven by speculation about future demands. This speculation is notoriously inaccurate, but that doesn’t stop commodity traders from betting on it and those bets are what drive prices.

The current low prices are largely related to global oil production and inventories being high and slow growth in overall demand. In the US, a rather uneventful hurricane season in the Gulf has kept supplies flowing and disruption at a minimum.

Closer to home, I’d say buy your beef now. Beef prices have been on the march upward as cold hits early and hard and a dry summer in many areas means hay and feed supplies are low. Grain prices are generally lower for now, but since there are two growing seasons now, it all can change with one weather report from S. American or Australia.

Even going back to the first quarter, we started to have trouble finding employees.

Skilled trades like welders, mechanics, etc, are in very high demand.

My young cousin Glenn just decided he was not going to re-up after 10 years in the Navy and he was really worried because he’d heard the job market was so bad for vets. Well, he went to a job fair and a guy was at the door asking vets what they were looking for. Glenn said “I’m a diesel mechanic, I need to find a job,” the guy looked at him like he was from another planet. Then he recovered and dragged Glenn off to a booth while yelling “Mine, mine, mine!” After looking at several offers, he took a $5000 signing bonus and a base pay of $80k plus overtime and bonus options. He’s going to get sent to a company paid service school the day after he gets done with the Navy. Not bad for a ranch kid from MT who took advantage of every training class Uncle Sam would let him take.

Generally, the slack goes out of the chain about 6 months before all the lagging indicators show that it has. If you’re looking for a job, NOW’s the time to hit it hard.

Sure. In Minot and Williston ND.

No such thing as easy money, of course. My cousin’s gig will have him starting at some maintainance depot in New Jersey and then he could get transferred from there to any of about 5 locations like Fairbanks AK. All of them really undersireable, IMO, but that’s me. He thinks the deal is golden after 10+ years of deployments, crappy Navy-town apartment housing, and trying to raise 2 kids.
