CRD – new gates

At least the title said “IF they get that far up stream”. Since the Flathead catfish is a predator of the Asian Carp, this is a great time to put pressure on the WI DNR to lower the flathead limit to less then 25 per day and close the wintering dormant season. It costs nothing to change the excessive limits. Is that the answer? No, but it’s another bullet IF they ever make it up this way. They’ve only been in the system for 40+ years…it might happen. “never waste a good crisis”

The CRD was due for an overhaul anyway, so I am not sure how much of this was spurred by the carp issue. Maybe the new gates, but the apron at the bottom was falling apart already..

Been watching their progress all year. Those guys get there early and leave late nowadays. The flow in those parts are all screwed up now with all of it diverted to the Brooklyn park side where I like to fish. I just hope they don’t mess up all the prime spawning grounds on the BP side when they do it next year. Depends where they put the road down but either way it doesn’t look good for next year fishing

The 67.5-foot-long gate, the second of nine to be installed, is part of a two-year, $16 million upgrade intended to prevent voracious Asian carp from leaping over the dam and reaching the upper Mississippi watershed.

I basically grew up at the CRD and cannot bieve that they are concerned about fish jumping over the dam. The only place remotely possible is where the old hydro turbines used to be. Seems extremely excessive even if the threat wast legit.

I remember the days with the old gates. There was some fantastic walleye fishing in the fall.

Anyone fish the downstream forks of the river on the BP side? Looks like a short walk. There is a nother spot in the area that I love hitting in April for redhorse. I wouldn’t mind another carp/sucker spot. PM if you like.

Now that I moved closer to the northside I will be hitting my old haunts in the spring. Rice Creek just ain’t what she used to be.

Side Note: Look out more lake, I am giving you a shot this winter.

I have fished that fork for cats a few times with absolutely zero luck Mike.

    Where did you move to?

I talk to some old timers down there once in a while and they all say the same thing. Back in the day there was some good fishing to be had there every fall, nowadays a different story. I don’t care how early I get there, sometimes 5am, they would have been there for at least an hour already, hope one day I can do the same thing, hopefully with more fish though.
