Funny you should mention that.I spotted a nice one in the neighbor’s pasture, just over the fence. Here comes the brain fart. He just put 3 mares in there and electrified the fence. SNAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Never mind.

How do you handle them and then how do you prepare them for the dinner dish?

I see them all the time. Kicked one once. Damn near suffocated for all the spores to blew outta it!

You have to get them when they first pop out. Slice them about 1/4 to 3/8 slabs. Fry in butter a seasoning. I have used them for a little side dish with meat or fish. Just remember to pick them early. They should have all white meat on the inside. Remember that and you should be ok!

I thought it was a different mushroom than what I called puffballs as a kid. So these these things pop and spew spores once mature?

I was tolded and read that they have to be all white on the inside. NO coloring what so ever.

That’s what I am wondering, if the white insides turn into spores.

From what I have seen the inside dries up and turns into a dust. At sometime it breaks open and spores blows with the wind. The mushroom that I was writing about grows in the same place. I believe this is the 3rd year in the same area.

I am sure they are similar if not the same thing I am thinking of, although the ones I’ve seen have only been about the size of my thumb. I also find them when the skin is like crinkly paper and when you’d squeeze them they would puff a brownish spore dust out the top.

The wives tale being that the dust was poisonous and could kill you if inhaled.

Found these by one of my stands. One the size of a football, one a softball and the other a baseball. I’m guessing the football is no good and the softball may be OK. The baseball was damaged already but I’ll cut the other two up after my hunt… and look for more this afternoon when looking for scrapes. Hope they are good cus I’d like to try them.

I saw four the size of basketballs on the side of our house. Should have looked earlier. Did not cut them open as I figured they were too big. Maybe next year I will watch for them and get to them before they get too big.

The football was yellow and neon green but the other two were good. They have a good taste, great consistency and interesting aftertaste…. and that was before cooking them. Now I’m going to fry some in butter. Thanks for the eye-opening experience I was hoping to have venison steak with them but it wasn’t in the cards tonight

I was reading that the largest puffballs can have trillions of spores… they have something in common with our national debt. that’s a lot of spores
