Found a great tool for cutting braid

While walking the isles last night at the wholesale show I was at, I came across a snip that really impressed me for cutting braid. For years, I have been buying cable scissors for low voltage / fiber optics that have a partial serrated edge that are designed for cutting Kevlar. Problem is they rust too easy. Anyways, I was checking out the Snips made by a company Boomerang. These snips effortlessly cut any diameter of braid perfectly clean. Didn’t matter if the braid was limp or taunt. I have no idea what the retail price on these are, but they are incredible for clean cuts. Not too often that I’m impressed with novelty tools, but this was worth the time I spent taking it to other booths to cut other manufacture’s lines with.

Cheap yet quality line cutter and its less than 6″ long.

Bought two 3 years ago, lost one overboard

The other one still works great and price can’t be beat.

It’s made from stainless steel so it won’t rust either.

Harbor freight is a awsome place! If you need a tool that your only gona use 1 or 2 times and don’t want to spend a lot. My dad is a barber and he gave me a pair of sheers. They will cut through any braid effortlessly

I have been using the one without the led light(which is pictured) for a couple of years. Works fantastic. Cabela’s has them at around $10 in the fly fishing area. I think the led light adds a couple of bucks to the price.

    Huh?
As a fishing guide, how many times do you think my clients and I use a braided line cutter in a year.

I’d be willing to bet its in the hundreds.

I certainly appreciate not having to pay 3 to 4x’s as much for a simple tool but truth be told, if I hadn’t found the tool above from Harbor Freight, I’d buy the other tool in a heartbeat regardless of it’s price.

I have at least 3 game shears in the boat. That’s what gets used.

I have a nice set of Gerber braid scissors but more times than not I pull out my pocketknife. The ones shown look neat.

Randy… what option did you use, or was there even much of a difference?

I also like that I can easily attach it to something in a kayak.

I use a small Rapala scissors now…. knife is a last ditch substitute. Pretty hard to close snips with it.

I didn’t look at any different sizes if that is the option your referring to. I think Joel B was GROSSLY under stating the number of cuts. By Far, I love my kevlar scissors, but these were just so compact and easy to keep in my pocket. I just looked them up as well and see they run 10-15.
I don’t know how long these have been around and I didn’t ask. I was just checking out the stuff shipping out for dealers in 2014 and came across these on a booth table. Like a kid, I had to play with them and see if they were just another cheap POS over rated tool. I was very pleasantly surprised by how clean the cut was and the fact that I didn’t need to hold or put any tension on the line. As smooth as a razor. So anyways, just thought I would pass along a good thing if anyone is interested in a better tool for cutting braid. Myself, I want something that is super easy and efficient – especially in cold weather

    Randy,

It does look like a decent tool albeit a bit pricey but certainly not the first time I’ve spent more than necessary on a piece of equipment for fishing.

    “Grossly understating”?

Although there may be some truth to this, it’s still the first time I’ve been accused of that! Guess I didn’t want to get accused of the opposite.

Joel, from fishing a wood-laden river bed this spring, I blew through over 200 jigs in a week and a half and was making a mad dash to pour more. Not to even get into how many blade baits got donated to the wood in the wolf river. From just a snap shot of how my spring fishing went with clients, I understand exactly what any guide on any river system could easily experience. I know you well enough to know you don’t intentional embellish things.

BTW – the Marcum display would look a whole lot better on my bench at home Plus, the new colors and new patterns out from Koppers Live target is getting better and better. For those that desire true life patterns that are anatomically correct, you need to see the stuff shipping for 2014. WOW!
