Electronics Left In Boat?

Due to a recent comment made in one of my posts, I have a question for all of you boat owners.

When your boat is left unattended outside, (not counting winter storage) do you remove your electronics?

I’ve made this a poll so you’re not sending thieves an invitation.

Since 1994, I am pretty sure that I have never removed a graph except when cleaning a windshield or doing maintenance work. If I have, I can not recall……

I have insurance to but if you have a claim guess what. Your rates will go up and over time, you just bought a new unit

ok that’s 500$ so far. that’s a good chunk for a new graph. I stayed at super 8 in park rapids and a guys boat got cleaned out. Plus if your on a trip you take the risk of not having your equipment on that trip. You don’t get the insurance check the Nxt day.

As mentioned insurance is great, but an expensive trip sure could get ruined quickly if your boat is cleaned out. I normally take everything out of the boat when I’m at a resort, cabin, or hotel. No sense tempting fate out there.

And if I don’t my FW may not allow me to replace.

I have a snap cover which works great when parked outside and a bright street light so my neighbors can see if anyone is messing around. Never had any issues at a resort either

Keep in mind that once those electronics or any fishing equipment leave your boat, they are no longer covered under your boat insurance policy through most insurance carriers.

If a theft of fishing equipment or electronics were to arise out of your garage, motel room, etc. you would now be filing a claim under your homeowners insurance, which is normally susceptible to a $1,000 or higher deductible, and I can guarantee your rates go up on your home insurance after a theft claim. Now I’m not saying that this is the morally correct way to safeguard your possessions, but just giving an example of how this would be handled from an insurance standpoint.

My advice would be to talk to your agent and know how your policy specifically covers your boat and then make your determination. I have a few carriers that offer an endorsement on their boat insurance policies for fishing equipment off premises, but again I’ve seen very few carriers offer this so check your policy and with your agent.

Its detached and I live in a high crime area. It sits alongside all my tackle boxes, rods and reels I bring inside as well. Even the new car sits outside but the boat is in the garage.

I leave mine on. If a thief is stupid enough to steal a fish finder from the time of the cavemen, he can have it. If they get stolen, then I get to get a new one.

Is it storing or unattended? You say both but those are very different things. I never take mine out if unattended someplace but do take them out when storing for the safety of the electronics and not hiding from thieves.

    I voted never.

    Figures…always one.

I’m talking about the regular season.

I’m not talking storage over the winter months when some folks winterize their boats and don’t use them until the snow is gone.

If someone wanted my gear that bad that they would shoot a person for it…me. I’m thinking THAT’S WHAT INSURANCE IS FOR!

(However, with todays carry laws no one including the bad guy knows who’s packing…just an fyi)
