They had some barriers up in Prairie du chien also. We just moved them and went on with our business.

Yup, virtual all property run by National Park Service are CLOSED!

Better be prepared for others, many you may not think Park Service controls, but I’ve read about many other properties (Including one of the River Boats at Taylors Falls in the newspapers that are also closed.

Im sure franconia and copas are still open. Both better landings in low water.that will mess up the canoe shuttle up there.

If they aren’t around they can’t give you a ticket.

I really don’t get it. Why bother with barricades? We really can’t use public property because of the shutdown. Who was the genius to make this order

I have serious questions about weather barracading boat landings is even legal. I believe that like the Minnesota government shutdown last year, this may be an unauthorized effort by Federal employees to “make the public feel the pain” and the legality is very suspect.

Where in the law does it say that if a WMA, etc can’t be patrolled, it may be closed? I don’t believe these actions are legal and I strongly suspect that people are doing this on their own and without authorization. Even if they are authorized, I question the legal basis for this.

I read in the Pioneer Press today that the park rangers who serve as law enforcement officials on the river are still on the job, but most other employees for the St Croix National Scenic Riverway are on furlough. The paddleboats out of Taylors Falls are not in business for traveling down the river nor are the kayak and canoe businesses since they use the Osceola Landing. This is very disappointing to a lot of people.

Here’s all you need to read: out of the Washington Post:

The Park Service appears to be closing streets on mere whim and caprice. The rangers even closed the parking lot at Mount Vernon, where the plantation home of George Washington is a favorite tourist destination. That was after they barred the new World War II Memorial on the Mall to veterans of World War II. But the government does not own Mount Vernon; it is privately owned by the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association. The ladies bought it years ago to preserve it as a national memorial. The feds closed access to the parking lots this week, even though the lots are jointly owned with the Mount Vernon ladies. The rangers are from the government, and they’re only here to help.

“It’s a cheap way to deal with the situation,” an angry Park Service ranger in Washington says of the harassment. “We’ve been told to make life as difficult for people as we can. It’s disgusting.”
