Can I get recommendations for garage size?

I am building a garage that will be used for my 17’8″ backtroller and likely a pontoon in the future (don;t know the pontoon size since i am a few yesrs from buying one).

Any recommendations? I would like to stay efficient on size but still do the above tasks.

Whatever size you choose won’t be enough…plan accordingly. ;-)

Well, there are a lot of variables to this question.

The constant issues that I’ve seen come up with boats and garages are:

    1. Door width and height. A lot of boats these days are too big/heavy to allow them to be pushed in/pulled out by hand. Therefore, the size of the door is critical. Having a door that’s 6 inches or a foot wider than your trailer’s widest point is going to cause constant potential issues.

I can see the pontoon being a big problem on both the height and width front.

    2. Depth. Once the boat is inside, it’s nice to have room to pass in front or behind or both.

    3. What’s your next boat going to look like? Are you thinking about up-sizing in the future? Make sure your garae isn’t built to fit only the current boat.

    4. Is it really worth it? Would you be better off to rent storage space rather than putting out the overhead to build it? Renting isn’t always a bad deal when you consider the time value of money.

You also have to consider resale. Building a $XX,XXX garage may not make sense if your home value won’t support getting any ROI out of it should you sell. In my situation for example, I WANT to build a new garage, but it would be a total giveaway because a brand new garage isn’t going to increase my total property value by even half of what the garage would cost.

    40 x 60 with 16′ side walls and a heated floor.

Take the longest thing you will park in there and measure it…then add at least 6′. Figure 2′ deep shelves on the side walls, and add at least 6′ in width to everything you will park in there. Use that as a starting point. Almost every garage I have built for a customer starts as “Holy crap is that huge”…only to hear say ” I wish…” a year later.
Only garage I know the customer had too much space was 120′ x 80′ with partial basement/spancrete, a loft room (apartment), and an underground tunnel to his house.

Be sure to identify and restrictions you may have. Many municipalities have non-agricultural building size restrictions for detached garages.

I have the 40×60 you describe, without the heated floors and only 14′ side walls. Unfortunately it is FULL.

It really is NEVER big enough.

I have an oversized heated 2 car attached to my house, and a 20 X 40 detached for the boat, atv, atv trailer, and miscellaneous other items. I could use another 20 X 40.

Like said above, get a big door. My boat won’t fit in my attached garage because the windshield is too high to get through the door. Had I built the house, it would have had a higher door. The door on my detached is too narrow (in my opinion) as I only have about 2 inches on each side of the fenders when backing in the boat.

Figure out what you need now, and then double the size and build that.

Like many things in life, bigger is better. But
then someone always has a bigger one.

I built a 25×40 the largest the city would let me have. I have 2 boats, hot rod and my truck and I still don’t have enough room for more toys. The wife and I are building a new home north of park rapids and I’m building a 80×80 drive through with heated floor and heated drive. I want to be able to put the 5th wheel in the garage as well.

I just built a 30×50 that is a drive through as well. I can pull my Excursion with my 203 Warrior hooked up with motor in trailering position and I have about 3 extra feet. Go as tall as you can it really opens up alot more storage options to utilize all the space. Plus its really nice to be able to stand up in your boat when its inside. I built mine to the max as far as heated floors, mega lights, insulation upon insulation, floor drain, water, forced air furnace, lots of electrical, etc and the cost gets away from you fast. Did alot myself on the interior and called in a bunch of friend favors. In the end I was pushing 60 k. I agree its hard to be to big but make sure you add 10-15k to the estimate so you know you can finish the building.

Like stated, when I moved to the house I am in now, going from a 24 x 24 2 staller ….I thought “WOW what a HUGE garage… it is 26 x 60…. today it is tiny…. Have fun and build what you want !

30X40 minimum. 40X60 would be better but still not enough. Be sure to use room in attic trusses.

    I went with a 28 x 64 Pole Building.

Concrete floors, three drains, water / power washer, heat and power around the entire perimeter and quality lighting to allow you to work on your equipment.

    Everything fits.

    Enjoy.
