Redskins Name (protest @ Lambeau)

Jew normally is only derogatory with an adjective in front of it or perhaps with the tone it is said.

People have the right to be offended.

The thing is, and I recognize this is a personal perception, but I don’t even think Indian when I hear the term Redskin.

So next are they going to protest the Blackhawks because it is 2xs as bad. I mean, the name is derogatory towards 2 separate races at the same time.

Here is the litmus test for me. If a group of people are offended from the inception of something, then I give them a little more credit. But if something exists a ling time and all of a sudden they start getting offended, I am quite cynical.

So, when is someone going to suggest we start boycotting casinos?

Pffft! We should really honor them for what they were. Marshmallows who rolled over easily and were easily bought. Cry me a trail of tears.

Quick, reply before Brian sees this.

We should dissolve the United Sates because we aren’t united in anything since we booted common sense out of our culture.

I’ve heard that Cuba is really politically correct and the weather is nice there. Maybe all the “progressive” thinkers should move there.

I would suggest outlawing the words “red”, “yellow”, “black”, and “white”. I’m sure that would fix everything.

If I were king I would eliminate all polital correctness. The constitution does not include a right not to be offended. How did our society become such a bunch of cry babies? I don’t think the government has the right to curtail free speech on racial, religious or any other basis.
Now having said that, there have always been mean spirited jerks, racists and biggots. I say give them their free speech but recognize them for what they are, the dregs of society. As far as sports team names, street names, and on and on. Get Over It! Do something productive with your time.

What is a sport name? Something that represents your state, a symbol of what you strive to be, maybe a symbol of intimidation. It was stated that Chiefs, Redskins, Warriors are names attributed to honor the people of their fighting ability. Possibly makes sense, but why not then have a team name WW2 vets, or other hero’s of past, because fighting is just one aspect of the culture, and for the most part was just one aspect where they probably would rather not have fought at all and would like to forget(especially Natives BC they got their butts handed to em). The names may not mean much now, but in their making I’m sure they didn’t pick Redskins for their name BC of their rain dance.
Change takes time, and just BC they didn’t complain about these issues before doesn’t mean that they never had root. Society is more open to these ideas nowadays and if it takes hold no need to pull out the old card of why didn’t you complain before. By that token we would still have segregated bathrooms and women’s suffrage would have failed.

    That should make me 25%?

Coon Rapids HS was unable to successfully teach me algebra so I could be way off.

    Now that was funny.

Protesting the Redskins name is a counter-productive way of making a point. The name isn’t going to change because nobody can make the owner’s change it and the more people protest it, the more the current owners are going to dig in their heels.

Noboy wins in these foolish protests. Trying to make a serious point about a cultural or social issue by using the NFL as a backdrop is like trying to promote the beauty of rural America by holding a press conference in downtown Detroit.

Professional sports, including NCAA sports, are not real life. They are entertainment.

If their bottom line began to suffer because of it you can bet they’d change the name overnight.

    I beg your pardon.

I think you’ll find that the aforementioned fine city, in an effort to distance itself from the negative connotations of its unfortunate former name, is now called Procyonid Rapids.

This was up for discussion by the mayor of CR to change the name of the city to Riverdale Rapids.

    No joke!

due to the vulgar sound of the word dam and since there’s one which bears the name of their good city; are they also considering, as an alternative, the usage of the word “impoundment” ?

FYI. A little follow up on the Coon Rapids thing.

    From KARE 11 website:

    Quote:

A comment at the end of a Coon Rapids City Council meeting six weeks ago has come back to haunt the council member who said it. Joe Sidoti suggested it might be an economically sound idea to change the name of his city. That comment stirred up a hornet’s nest. A sign on Coon Rapids Boulevard gets right to the point, “Joe, if you don’t like our name, you should move!” Joe Sidoti has lived in Coon Rapids for 37 years and says his suggestion that the town consider a name change was motivated by economics and nothing more, “The race card has been played in this issue and that’s not my intention. My intention is economic and business growth.” Sidoti is a salesman, and says customers have problems with the name, for example, the vice president of a department store chain Sidoti encouraged to build in Coon Rapids told him, “We will never put one of our stores in a city with the name of “Coon Rapids.” and that kinda got the wheels rolling.” Sidoti figures a name change could capitalize on the Mississippi River that forms the south border of his city. He points to a survey conducted to find out among other things, what’s missing in Coon Rapids. Forty percent of the respondents said, nothing was missing, “But then you look at “family restaurants,” “fine dining,” “high-end retail,” “boutique shops,” and “more retail.” You total that up, it’s 43 percent,” said Sidoti. “If they’re looking for more, we need to do our due diligence, to bring it to ’em.” Scott Schulte is the council member at large grew up in Coon Rapids and says he doesn’t think the name hurts anything, “We’re 99 percent developed in Coon Rapids. Property is full. We’re full of business. We’re full of housing. Everything is going great.” Schulte’s sentiments run parallel to those of Mayor Tim Howe. But the mayor adds that a previous mayor, who succeeded in changing the city logo to an oak leaf from the original raccoon, also suggested a name change. “The media never got a hold of it, and the rest of the council never wished to pursue it any farther, and that’s where it ended,” said mayor Howe. The mayor says the issue will be put on a list of what are called “workshop items,” and will likely be discussed again in five or six years.

Notice how he turns his head slightly before grabbing the food. Me thinks the cat has reprimanded him once or twice.

white people seem to like to be offended for other people. outside of a few outliers i don’t really see the native american outcry for this.

my grandmother was full blooded cherokee and to her redskin was a normally used word by the cherokee tribe to distinguish themselves from white people.

i believe a few antropologists have confirmed that there isn’t much duragatory meaning behind it outside of a few circumstances.
