Little garbage hound of mine beat me to a fishhook yesterday. My attentention lapsed and when I saw her she had a chunk of fishline hanging out of her mouth, sinkers included. I tackled her pried open her mouth and saw it was deeper than I wanted to deal with. Cut the line, made a call to my vet and headed for New Richmond. Four x-rays and $300 later ($150 for emergency ofc call) he tells me that it made it to her stomach. Hopefully my luck will hold and it’ll pass through with out getting hung up. Mean while, here I am, down on my knees, stick in hand shreading poop piles looking for the offending hook. I’m sure I’m providing entertainment for those around me. Can’t say enough about picking up after yourself while shore fishing jerr

Things like that are why I don’t take my dog with me while fishing, just too many things that can go wrong. Many years ago while fishing the Croix I heard a dog in a different boat that got a hook in it, that dog’s howl echoed for a long way in the valley that morning.
September 9, 2013 at 9:35 pm #1193960This is the exact reason I don’t take our dog out in the boat fishing. She is a vaccumn for every piece of junk she gets her mouth on.
I am afraid she might try to eat lure or hook, my vet bills are high already for her exact eating habits like that.
We love our dogs but boy they can get into trouble so easy.I hope everything works out for your dog and you.

Guess I forgot to add that one of the reasons I was there was picking up garbage left by those that are less able to walk to the garbage can with their junk. We do our morning walks and I bring a couple Wally bags to put trash in. We usually get 2 bags full in a 1 mile stretch of riverfront. Not always the fishermen, sometimes it’s the homeless and partiers that are guilty. You’re right about my “lack” of common sense but as hot as it’s been, the water makes excellent exercise for her. jerrSeptember 9, 2013 at 10:08 pm #1193967What a bummer, Jerr
[censored] happens and sometimes there’s nothing even the best owner can do, just life I guess.
Contrary to others, I bring my pooch fishing on almost every single trip… and I fish a lot!
Has she been hooked? Yep… Has she eaten a hook/jig – Damn close… But would she rather be sitting at home moping around or in the boat licking walleyes… that’s what I thought
Hope for the best!
September 9, 2013 at 11:50 pm #1193984One of my dogs once chased something into a hollow log up in NW Michigan.
Thinkin it was a rabbit, I sent her in.
It took a local vet most of the afternoon to get a coupla hundred porcupine quills out of her lips, mouth and throat.
Imagine if you were a fox with no vet insurance and did that!
…Not as bad as an old girlfriend, whose granddaughter recently caught the afternoon’s biggest one — a sunfish jig, with rubber worm,in the tip of granny’s nose. To top it off, the nurse at the emergency room thought it was some kinda jewelry!
At least the surgeon had the presence to clip off the barb, instead of digging and suturing, as happened to me about 40 years ago when I tried casting a fly against a strong wind.
LESSON HERE: Always carry a strong sharp nipper tool!
September 10, 2013 at 1:22 am #1194003Left half a dozen dry flies on the table after a tying session. Came back 20 minutes later to my wirehair coughing up a hair ball. I’ve still got the x-ray around somewhere. All but 2 passed, and they had to cut her open to remove them. Damn dogs!
September 10, 2013 at 2:05 am #1194010I had a beautiful yellow lab suck in a stinkbait tube two years ago. I was bank fishing and had it it laying inside my bucket while I rebaited the other line. The nice man and his wife stopped to talk to me and the dog sucked it right out of the bucket. He yelled, she screamed, I jumped, and we spent 5 minutes unhooking the dog’s tongue.
September 10, 2013 at 11:58 am #1194030I bring mine with about half the time. Sharing a boat with a Great Dane can be a pain, but he enjoys it. Last year, he got a swim jig stuck in his back when I was casting. Surprisingly, he was pretty non-chalant about it. I popped it out and kept fishing (although the backlash that ensued caused me to switch reels!).
I have noticed that he pays a lot more attention when I am casting, now!
September 10, 2013 at 12:56 pm #1194044the two sea dogs. no hooks or anything yet. although the chubbier one did eat my fishing partners meatball sub on saturday when he was set it down to fight a channel cat.
September 10, 2013 at 12:59 pm #1194046I can’t take my dog fishing with me. You see, Macy the Wundermutt has a little quirk. Being half lab, you’d think she would like to fetch but she doesn’t. If you toss a tennis ball or frisbee, she’ll look up at you with the “why did you throw that thing, you dummy? Now you’re going to have to go and get it” look on her face.
But the second something attached to a fishing rod is hurled, she turns into the world’s greatest retriever and will stop at nothing to get the lure.
Dogs are weird.
September 10, 2013 at 1:02 pm #1194048I hooked my brother’s dog once, or should I say the dog hooked itself on one of my poles because it was not being obedient. I’ve actually hooked 2 dogs.
The most important thing with a fricken crank is to restrain them asap. This one could have had a back hook get into her eye if I wasn’t quick enough. Both times we just pushed it through and clipped the hook.
Now my pug, he is more excited about napping in the sun while the waves bounce him around. He’s the perfect fishing partner, I just need to get a boat next year.
September 10, 2013 at 1:31 pm #1194050Our Border Collie who is no longer with us stepped on a muskie lure years ago(poor housekeeping in the boat). The scream she let out sounded like a human, it was horrible. I was dripping with sweat and pepper was biting me as I tried to push that big treble hook thru. Once it was out she just layed down and licked the wound. It was one of the worst fifteen minutes of my life, The FW was yelling at me, the kids were crying and I was getting bit! We’ve had alot of dogs but she was hands down the best, sure do miss her…

Like they say on the news, film @ 11. Going in for more x-rays this afternoon. Haven’t found the hook “laying around” anywhere, gotta see where it is and if it’s moved jerrSeptember 11, 2013 at 9:26 pm #1194413Quote:
