Everyone here knows me as a bass guy, and I’ve tried to give some good reports and advice when I get on good fish. This year has been strange to say the least. I went to the East Coast for half of the summer to be a camp counselor and had a BLAST, fished a lot before I left and after, even a few tournaments. Now this WHOLE year I haven’t caught 1 bass over 4lbs…. not one. I have caught some massive dogfish and northern. But no big bass.

Some people may say, “Adam you’re not on any fish”. To prove you wrong I would like to show you all that I have been on some monster bass. Almost every time I have gone out me and my partner have caught over a 18lb bag, doesn’t matter what lake I go to. I always throw the same bait as my partner when he starts smacking them, hell he even gives me his rod sometimes and just sits to watch. I won’t catch a fish he’ll stand up do the same thing and smack them. When I do hook into some giants, and believe me I’ve lost some monsters this summer, they ALWAYS come unbuttoned somehow.

Now I want to know if anyone believes in curses here, because right now I do. For the first time this year I am going to head back to the first lake I fished this year and see if that breaks it for me because I have some huge qualifiers coming up. Anyone else been in this sort of slump before? Second guessing everything really sucks guys, let me tell ya. What you all think?

Here are some pics to show you guys I’m not lying. I just now realized we like to wear the same things fishing a lot, these are not from the same day haha, i promise. But hats off to Brent Relopez and Sam Sobieck two of my best buddies.

The only time I have had chronic issues of losing fish has been with stretchy mono or fluorocarbon line. Makes hook sets challenging and fish can have a tendency to wiggle free.

So, to fix the problem … I either use braid with a fluorocarbon leader, or Yozuri Hybrid – the only non-braid I have found with low stretch. Has made a huge difference for me.

TRYING TOO HARD.. and possible hook size.. I stopped losing fish when I upgraded my hook size.. and sometimes You are TOO QUICK ON THE SWITCH.. meaning.. that you are so intense that you aren’t giving the fish a chance to get the lure into his mouth.. Now we are talking seconds, or half seconds or what not.. but when you are PRESSING, everything changes.. go out.. HAVE FUN.. do a bass dance in the boat.. sing a stupid song with your friend( this is the story of the UGLY LADY ..the Brady bunch Theme song).. don’t press.. why? because YOU ARE TALENTED.. and you are just trying a bit too hard.. and the more you press, the less your lures look natural.. act natural.. Its like a dog sensing fear.. just have fun, Fun, FUN>. Plus.. read this months North American fishing club article.. the mental aspect of fishing by Jimmy Linder.. have fun.. YOU ARE AN EXCELLENT FISHERMAN.. Your photos prove it.. believe in YOUR SELF..

Needed that! Thanks guys! It hasn’t been an issue with line, I’ve thrown the same stuff forever. Hook size it could have been but it’s on a lot of jigs I’ve thrown forever as well. I think I’ve probably just been a little too eager and quick on the trigger. When I do get a fish I probably horse it too much or just think it’s a weed. I DO need to just go back to fishing.

This year was probably the best year I’ve had for Bass fishing. The biggest change I made from years past is I slowed down, way down. I paid more attention to the little things and as a result, I caught a lot of nice fish. I did notice from the fish I lost throughout the year, most of the time it was a direct result from not concentrating on getting a good hook set or trying to muscle them in. There still is plenty of good fishing left for the open water season. Good Luck!
