Ipilot On a Terrova questions

A friend of mine just purchased the Ipilot unit for his terrova. The guy in the service department told him to never use the foot pedal again as it will ruin the ipilot unit. Never heard that one before, has anybody else?
Also he was told to bring the motor into his basement during the winter and store it in the upright position not flat on the floor. I told him that didn’t make any sense to store it in the upright position as it is laying down all summer while it is on the boat. Any body have an answer to this?

The guy in the service department has no idea what he’s talking about.

I’m on my second terrova. I use the pedal a ton when jigging. Hasn’t affected the i-pilot one bit. I think the dude got dropped on his head a lot as a child. I have never heard of either of those. I can maybe understand the upright part, but, no, I guess I can’t.

If you have a power drive you can’t use the foot pedal with the terrova it is fine to use.

I also use the foot ped. The tech needs to do some reading and learn his products. Hate un informed sales people

He was told this by a service tech. That repairs Minnkota’s at a well known trolling motor repair facility in the south metro that is spoken highly of here on IDO.

I agree with the part about storing in a heated area. Trolling motors use permanent magnet motors. The magnet halves are epoxied to the wall of the motor housing. The housing is steel and the magnets are a different material with the result that severe cold can contract one material more than the other and break the bond or crack the magnet. I had this happen to a motor of mine some years ago. Electronics can also be damaged by severe cold so I think it is smart to store in a heated garage or basement. It should not make any difference if it is standing up or laid down.

Well my terrova is at least 8 years old and the Ipilot was install when they first came out and it has never faulted. So if you want to waist your time doing all that weird stuff have at it but ill just keep using mine and not look back.

The only problem you might have is interference with a humminbird. To help fix you have to call humminbird direct and get the power choke for it. Do not call or go to the trolling motor shop since from experience they have no clue about it.
