With the recent posts on the sauger population and also looking back on the past few years results got me thinking. I am making a poll that I would like all those interested in to reply to. If you have an opinion or question please feel free to post it.

I want to keep this as fun as possible for everyone and also give everyone an equal chance at winning, so I want as many peoples input as possible.

Switch to a CPR format and take pictures of as many as you like, count the top 8 for the contest.

I haven’t fished saugerama in the past but I voted keep it the same. That tourney is not hurting the population. She will hopefully cycle back, but I don’t think anglers are much of the problem anymore. I think it’s much more than that. If she is hurting due to environmental factors, anglers certainly aren’t going to help by harvesting saugs they catch, but for her to bounce back it is going to take much more than anglers releasing all saugers in my opinion. I want the saugs back in full force, but I don’t think saugerama has any credible impact on the population. My 2 cents. I am however still in favor of an all season 4 fish limit. I just think it would be better for the resource as a whole in the future.

I know the times I fished that tournament I sure didn’t hurt the Sauger population

I voted keep it the same. The last few years the winning weight has been down from previous years but that just makes it a tighter field. This tournament has become a tradition so why mess with something that isn’t broken?

I think it’s fun leaving it at an all sauger tourney.

I voted keep it the same. If walleyes are added to the mix, it becomes just another walleye tourney. Saugers only makes the tourney unique and something special. More fun in my opinion…but this is just that…an opinion.

I agree with most above. If the saugers are in that bad of shape where this relatively small tourney will effect them, the DNR’s need to take action now to lower limits/slot limits/close the season.

Seeing that the population is down, what would be wrong with each team weighing there big fish only? To me that would be more fun and give everyone a fair shot and help fish mortality.

Another consideration could be a 4 fish limit, most people have more fun when they get a “limit”. During our summer tourneys you never hear some say, “I got a four fish limit” they just want to say they got a limit. 4 fish would also bring tighter weights in the field and would make it a little more fun for everyone!

With the sauger population down and the average size being way smaller……….ITS TIME TO ADD WALLEYES TO THE MIX. ………rrr

Thanks for all the input already. Please keep it coming. Just to add to a few things that were mentioned. One being this is not a kill tournament. Given the time of year that it is hosted I would say more than 90% of the fish that are brought to the scales are released in good healthy condition. I know there is probably some mortality based on where a few people fish but that is a given whether its a tourny or not.

please keep the input coming and hopefully we can come up with the best solution for all of us!!

I can not remember off the top of my head….was the min: length 15″ or 14″ in the past? Possibly drop it to 14″ so more guys weigh in fish if you do plan to keep it at the sauger only format. I personally vote leave it the same or 4&4 weigh in format. Either way I will be there.

There has always been a big walleye award for you guys who don’t chase sauger…

I voted to keep it the same. Will try to fish it this year!

Wow there is going to be a huge turn out this year. There have been 101 votes already. But will they all be fishing, or have they fished in the past.

I think it should stay. I’ve always had a good time, even when the fish haven’t cooperated. BTW, do we have an ETA on when it will be this year? I have to get the time off from work. Just looking forward to it already!

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! Most all the bigger sauger we see caught are released in very survivable condition, so I don’t believe the tourney does much harm.

Very good feedback and opinions so far!!

Last year I believe it was 14″ but I could be wrong. I know I have had it at both 14″ and 15″ in years past. I have no issue with putting the minimum to 14″ or even 13″ if people feel its needed and would help everyone have more fun.

The same as years past it will be the third Saturday in October which will be October 19th this year.

Just a few added notes, this will also be a Skeeter Real Money tournament and also may have some exciting news along those same lines soon if it all pans out! I will let you know as soon as that is finalized!
