New Phone?

Hey all you Higher Tech people, I need your advice if you would please chime in.

I think I’m getting forced into getting a new cell phone somewhat soon. Mine is having issues at times. As of right now I’m in no hurry, but that could change. On my existing one my buttons do not want to respond and my phone will lockup. Pulling the battery seems to be the only way to kick start it again.

I’ve always had a flip type phone through Verizon since the first one I had, well almost. (There was the radio bag phone, and then there was the brick for those of you that are old enough to have that knowledge).

I’m not a person to send text messages, I never have. I will only receive one if I know who sent it so your name better come up on my screen. I do not have an included data plan. I know this will change and my monthly bill will be going up. I’m a phone and e-mail type of guy.

    My wants,
When I’m on the internet I want the sites to come very quickly!
I want “the best” phone quality for what I am hearing and how I am being heard!
Some others might come to mind, just not now.

There is Apple, Droid, 4G, 3G, Blackberry, Smart Phones, heck for all I know all of these are the same just different suppliers If there are multi manufactures for the same phone which one would be preferred?

I appreciate your help! Again I’m a phone and e-mail type of guy. What one (or ones) would you steer me towards?

    Thanks in advance!

I’ve been with Verizon since I’ve had a cell with great luck, but their plans have gone up a lot. I had an i=phone for a couple months and hated it. I now have a Razr HD and really like it. I’m glad I didn’t get the bigger Samsung, I like the size of this phone. A lot people do have the Samsung so it may be a great phone, I don’t know. You may want to look into going with a pay as you go plan if you don’t use a lot of data, I’ll be looking at this soon for my wife. Sound quality on my phone is great, even with speaker phone, 4G internet is fast. I pretty much like everything about it. Any other questions let me/us know.

Don’t know how often you fish 3/12 Denny but verizon smart phones don’t work down there,,,works fine at LOTW and clear down in southern Arkansas…but not Creston. Go figure. My sons el chepo flip phone works at 3/12 but my Droid doesn’t.

I also have the RAZR HD and really like it. I’m kind of a technophile so I have done my research. If I would have had the money at the time I would have gotten the Maxx version for the extra battery life though, even though I am more than happy with the standard version battery. In my experience Verizon had the best coverage hands down. Last weekend up north all the att and t mobile friends were using my phones wireless hotspot. I had 4G just outside of remer which is crazy. The iPhone is nice by I don’t want to get trapped in the apple ecosystem. I recommend buying on Amazon through your carrier whatever you do. You will save a lot if money on the phone.

Droid Max HD 4G. Battery will last 2 days, easy. I plug mine in every night out of habit but it has never been dead unless I a up north out of the 4G service.

Razr HD here. Pretty happy with it. Shop around. I got mine way cheaper on Amazon than at the Verizon website or store.

My husband has the Razr HD and loves it. I have the Razr M, which is a smaller phone. I like his but it’s a little big for my preference. We have Verizon as well; you just can’t beat their coverage area.

My carrier, Verizon is whom I’m staying with unless someone can steer me away for a series of very good reasons. My carrier has had the best coverage across the United States and Canada.

I’m not married to them but divorce comes hard in my mind, I’m rather old fashion if you will.

Some have messaged me to get the ATT, and Apple I-Phones, are they available through the Verizon Network? (Att no I think, I-Phone I think yes).

Please keep your thoughts coming! My head is not swimming in deep enough water! (Leave that comment alone BK LOL )

I’d go to the store and try out the different phones to see which one you might like. It’s kind of the Ford/Chevy, Apple/Droid debate.
I recently got a Iphone and like it, I’m on Verizon plan.

I was much like you, flip phone that dials and sends a few texts. I got a Razr Maxx when i joined the smart world last fall. Internet pages come up quick. I tend to take 2-5 day fishing trips and with proper battery management i can make the Maxx last by basically limiting the amount i use it, and when not using it, internet and gps are always off, screen brightness dimmed.

My only complaint is that the speaker isn’t very loud when you are talking. i.e. i have to move the phone around on my ear to find the sweet spot so i can hear the other person talk. I am fairly hard of hearing, but was immediately disappointed with the volume.

No way i could touch anything that says Apple.

For internet and email, I would go with 1) the new Blackberry Z10 or 2) the Samsung Galaxy 4.

Checkout Straight Talk plan from Walmart, they use AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile as carriers depending on your Phone type and configuration. $45 plus tax ($52) a month for unlimited talk, text, data. Cannot beat the price. Month to Month so you are not locked in. You can have phones any where from a cheap flip phone to Samsung, iPhone, you can even bring your own phone.

My Razor HD has been a fantastic phone. Its my work phone so I only carry it during business hours. My off hour phone is a Sanyo heavy duty flip and has no internet access.

I would suggest any of the following 3. We run several of each here and they all work well for us.

    Motorola Razr Maxx
    Samsung Galaxy S4
    Iphone 5

All three will accomplish what you need. I would suggest you get a good protective case if you are “hard” on your cell phone. Otter makes a waterproof case that is pretty sound. But it does had bulk to the size of the device.

I’m ordering the new Droid Maxx Ultra this week. This will be the first of the new devices so I can’t comment on how “good” it is.

Otter does make a good protective case, get one you will be glad you did the first time you drop the phone!!

Also lifeproof makes a great case that is water proof down to 2M, dirt proof, snow proof, shock proof

Thanks to all of you so far!

I know that there are several of you out there that still want to speak your thoughts on this still, Yes?

My ear is open to hear what is great now and what I should be looking to in the near future.

I’ve wanted to chime in, but I don’t know what to tell you. You sound like you just do the basics, email, calls and a few texts.

I’d go with Verizon and their smallest share plan. Just be sure to monitor your usage. You’d be hard pressed to reach 1 gig in a month with just email and internet, but you might get into some apps with your smart phone…like…I dunno…Navionics App.

All the phones mentioned will be just fine. I’ll throw the Galaxy S4 out there too from Samsung. I have the S3 and love it. I recommend the S4 because just like any other technology, you might as well get the latest, because the latest will be outdated soon enough.

Pug, You and most all others that have posted are some that I wanted to hear from. I was looking for others to chime in and create a discussion on this yet still.

I know myself well enough that I may stick to my guns in the front thinking and quickly go with the “That’s Kewl” and go with the flow.

I will “Not text and drive”
I will only answer a call by pushing the steering wheel button to answer a call while driving”

I will not do my facial makeup while driving”!! Get My THINKING??

Still looking for discussion on what is out there now and where this is going. Please?

    Thanks,
    Denny O

You could get one of the new Droids from Motorola that came out and be that hipster who has the latest and greatest before everyone else.

Pug, do you know something that I don’t know?

If I catch your drift the new Droids will not arrive till later this month.

Other than that it seems to me that the majority is heading me to the Droid Razor HD with a nod to the Z10 and Galaxy 4’s?

No, I don’t know anything you don’t. I haven’t really been following new phones coming out since I am not in the market.

Whoever thought making Android phones named Droid was a good idea is an idiot. I was hearing about the MotoX and thought that was being released to all carriers. That was just released yesterday. I see the Droid Ultra, Mini and Maxx are completely different.

Same goes for the term Maxx. Use it just for one model. Now you will have Razr Maxx and Droid Maxx. People will get confused to what model Maxx you are referring to!

In any event, if you are looking for a “Droid”, might as well wait for the Maxx or Ultra.
