I want to thank Dean and Brett at SBC for trying to get my Yamaha fixed. I really have been throwing them a curve ball and the boat is’nt cooperating! Here’s the poop…..Motor won’t turn off with the key or the safety switch. Here’s the curve ball…After them looking at it and trying it, It turned off everytime!!! I used it this weekend and I can’t get it to shut doiwn about 1/2 the time. From what I’ve found on the internet, It may be a bad diode in the alternator or a bad relay… Something else for them to check….IO’m frustrated with it, And I can only imagine what they feel like having it shut off everytime.

You can only mimic so much in a test tank. Talk them into going on a little fishing trip close by and while out see if it acts up and see if they can get a handle on it.

So when you do finally shut off the motor when your out fishing, what do you do????

    I think it’s a bad switch….seems like I’ve had a problem like this about 20 years ago on another boat I had….

Have you or anyone had the wires off on this switch before?/or added an accessory to the switch? Because your “off” is staying hot (at last for you)

    (BTW, I hate electrical problems)
    Good luck..

Had it at SBC and they changed out the switch… The only way to kill it is to grind the starter on the flywheel for a 1/2 second. Then it shuts off everytime.

My 1st E-tec had a similar problem. Nobody could figure it out. I would take cover off then it would kill. One off the wiring harness was not snapped tight. I snapped it together never happened again in the 5 years I owned it. I would check all the harness on the motor you never know. The cover caused on connection to flex breaking contact for the kill switch/key. Worth a try. Of course at the Shop they ran it with cover off and everything functioned normally.

I have this same exact problem on my 03 115 yamaha……what works for me when it doenst shut off is go back to the motor and shack wiring harness and it shuts right off. Its weird I don’t know why it does it either but the wire harness shack has always svut it off so I’ve never done anything more with it.

Now last night I had it out and moved around a few times and it turned off all but 1 time. And that 1 time i turned up the RPM’s a lttle bit and it turned off. I’ll have to try that shaking the wiring though…Thanks guys for the ideas.

I would be tracking down the ground for the ignition and kill switch. I had the same intermittent issue with one of my ATVs and it was the ground for the ignition.
