DO NOT try to fish with Dave Koonce

Three times this year Koonce and I have tried to get out fishing and three times mother nature has ruined our plans. We were supposed to hit Lake Michigan this afternoon and tomorrow morning, but winds gusting close to 40 and waves predicted to 9 feet canceled that. Personally, I really like Dave, but mother nature seems to hate him like my dog hates squirrels. Just wanted to give the rest of the IDOers a fair warning if you ever plan to fish with him.

Ummmm, not sure where you get your weather reports from or where you plan on fishing out of, but the lake is glass this morning in Milwaukee. Winds supposed to kick up tomorrow afternoon for a bit but only to 19mph and Westerly, so it wont get too bad out there even after that. Waves are less than two feet for the whole weekend. Plus, the big fish are biting and they aren’t too far out anyways. Come on down!

Would be a different story if it was a 20 minute drive to the marina, or if we were fishing this morning and not tonight and tomorrow morning. Too far to go to end up sitting in the parking lot. As much as I hate trusting weather forecasts since they are typically wrong, I hate it more when they are right and I wasted a day of vacation.

Last reports I had were that nothing was in close, and my last trip we were out in 140+. Just one of those deals where distance from home impacts the decision.

Gotcha, I guess its different since I have the luxury of looking at the lake as I drive over the Hoan bridge twice a day, and live 5 mins from the launch. I just go off of wind speed and direction and what the lake is like the 24hrs prior to a trip. NOAA is worthless IMO, they just say waves 1-2ft every day pretty much, which ive learned means anything from flat as a table to 6 footers. Just trying to give you a first hand look at conditions. I will be out tonight and tomorrow AM in my 17.5 ft no question. Tomorrow afternoon\ evening might get bumpy but it will lay back down by saturday AM and ill be at it til midnight for Salmon A Rama. As far as fishing, theres a pile of eater fish (hos and bows with the ocasional laker or king) in that 180-250′ area. Another good band of the same kind of fish with a few more four year olds in that 100-120′. Im only interested in the big four year olds though, so Im sticking much closer to shore and tying into some nice screamers pretty consistently. Too bad it didnt work out for ya this weekend, haven’t seen any consistent big fish til the past few days. Feel free to drop me a PM for conditions next time your thinking of coming down.

I look at it this way. Us cancelling will just insure that the weather stays good for you local guys. If we would have made the drive, I guarantee you it would be blowing 30 by 3:00 today and 60 by tomorrow morning. This should give you nice semi-flat conditions. I may have to try and make a run down one day next week just for a day trip.

LOL. I know how that goes, so thanks, I guess! Hope you get out fishing somewhere this weekend at least. Good luck and tight lines. Maybe I’ll see ya down here one of these days.
