Old pump was a 220v deep well pump with 4 wires, red, black, white and green. The new pump is a 220v sprinkler pump with only 3 connections. Where does the extra wire go?

Is the old pump with 4 wires a 3 phase motor and the new one only single phase? 3 phase=3 hot wires and a ground.

Are you looking at the wiring outside where the old pump was ? Because most well pumps have a capacitor to start it usally located next to the pressure tank inside the house.
Or the red and black are your 2 hots and the white is a neutral, green is always ground. I would check with meter to make sure your hooking it up right.

Red and black to L1 and L2, then ground bare or green, white not used on your 220 volt application.

If it were 3 phase power all three wires would be same color, but his would be single phase

Thanks for the reply’s. There is a starter or capacitor for the old pump, do I have to rewire form the breaker box or can I just cap the white wire?

Yeah, just pig-tail off the white wire lead, don’t need it.
