Had the seal fail on a lower unit – brand new motor this spring. Have never found fishing line on it. Is it possible for these things to just go bad without some assistance (ie. fishing line)?

I’d try one more seal, could have been a bad seal or a rough spot on the shaft. Run an indicator on the shaft to check for run-out and wiggle, that’ll tell you quite a bit. jerr

also, pull the prop off….. it will find its way behind the prop and then in your seals………

Props been off, no line….never has been any line to my knowledge. Thinking it was defective from the start, and finally started leaking 2 days ago.

Still under warranty so they better cover it regardless as to what they think happened!

Been through a couple seals on my 03 Yamaha. Found that not all water was draining from lower unit and ice was wrecking seal.

What size and make of motor. The ones on my honda run about $5 each and go in and out in about 20 minutes.

When you are busy netting Drew’s fish you need to place your rod in the holder! Better yet, reel it in!!! How many times do I have to tell you! j/k

From my experience of owning too many new & used outboards? Too many things can go wrong as mentioned above. Afterall they are made by humans…. Get ‘r fixed for free and get back in position to net Drew’s next ‘eye…

    It’s a 2013 Mercury 25 4-stroke.

No kidding….I wish that was the case! Been a month since I’ve wet a line. Drew on the other hand, was the walleye’s last night with a couple of old guys…. telling them how easy it is I’m sure…

I would do as said above, take it back to the dealer and request them to check the prop shaft for runout and extra play. It could be a bad seal, rough spot on the prop shaft, to much runout in the shaft or too much play in the gear set.
